  5. Registration to the University • Partially pre-filled registration forms available at the International Office (Room A129 Main Building) • Instructions for registration • Student Union Membership Fee – Receipt! • Student Card Application Form – Photo! • Registrar’s Office

Registration • Where to pay the student union membership fee? • Cash at any of the local banks – Osuuspankki, Itsenäisyydenkatu 11, opening hours: 10:00 –16:30 - please note that you will need an ID (passport or an ID card valid in the Schengen area) • From your own bank account using online banking – remember to print out a receipt!

Banking services • Do I need to open a bank account? • In most cases, it is not necessary • You can pay the Student Union fee and your monthly rent to TOAS from your own bank account in your home country – within SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) no additional fees for transfers • Also the TOAS deposit will be refunded to your bank account in your home country • You can withdraw money with any cards with Visa and MasterCard logos using the OTTO cash machines/ATMs

Banking services • When do I need to open a bank account? • If you stay in Finland for longer than a year • If you come from outside the SEPA area (28 EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland & Monaco) and will not manage with the banking services provided by your home country • If you receive regular payments (grants, salary, etc.) that are paid only to a Finnish bank account

  9. Banking services • If you want to open a bank account • You should make an appointment e.g. at Osuuspankki, by contacting them via their online service

Student card • can be collected in about three weeks from the Student Union TAMY, address: Yliopistonkatu 60 A, second floor • costs 10 euros and it has to be paid in cash • you need to have an identification card (with your photo on it) or a passport with you • functions as a key card to the computer classrooms at the University and as a library card in the main university library • http://www10.uta.fi/Kortit/Kortit/

Student card • After registration, the Student Certicate from the Registrar’s Office entitles you to the discounts e.g. in the university cafeterias before you obtain your student card • If you intend to travel by train before you get your student card -> please pick up a copy of ’Certification for Acquisition of Student Card’ for the Finnish National Railways, in order to get the 50 per cent student discount on train fares

Basic User Account • Instructions for activating the basic user account (BUA) • Operational within three working days after the activation • Personal e-mail address and home directory • Right to log on to the computers in the computer classrooms and intranet pages of the University • Right to use the electronic services for students • more information tomorrow at 11.35!

  13. Computer classrooms • Beforeyouobtainyourstudentcard, youcanuse the followingcomputerclassrooms 1. Computer lab ML10 (main building, 2nd floor) 2. Computer lab ML5 (main building, D-wing downstairs) • Opening hours during the Orientation Course • Mon 12-16, Tue 14-15, Wed 14-16, Thu13-15 and Fri13-15 User nameandpasswordarerequiredforloggingontothecomputers in computerlab ML5: youcangetthemfromthe International Office downstairs!

Travel card for local buses • Frenckell Service PointFrenckellinaukio 2 B, ground floorOpening hours Mon-Fri 8:30 – 15:45 • Ticket fares • Age group 12 – 24 years: youth ticket – no student certificate required • Over 25 years – only those who have a Finnish social security number will receive a student ticket -> Please go to the local Register Office (Maistraatti, Hatanpään valtatie 24), in order to get a social security number -> EU citizens will need to register their stay in Finland at the local police department first

  15. Notification of change of address • This form is used to inform the Post Office of your current residence so that your mail is delivered correctly • Please fill in the form and drop the envelope in any postbox

  16. Residence permit • Non-EU citizens have applied for a residence permit already before entering Finland • EU citizens and citizens of Liechtenstein and Switzerland must register their stay if staying over three months in Finland • Form ’Registration of right of residence’ • Enclosures required: • https://www.poliisi.fi/poliisi/home.nsf/pages/FBC50CC59E5B37D6C2257801004AE49B?opendocument • fee: 50 €

  17. Residence permit • EU citizens register their residence at the local police station, Sorinkatu 12 • You can make an appointment online athttp://www.ajanvaraus.fi/isl/rms.do?url=poliisi • Nordic citizens must register their residence if they stay in Finland longer than six months – this is done at a Registrar Office (Maistraatti)
