  1. What are the Different Types of Chemotherapy Oncology.fortisbangalore.com

  2. Chemotherapy is a process for the treatment of cancer. It helps in killing and reducing the spread of cancer cells. People who have cancer are often treated with multiple chemotherapy sessions with more than a single type of chemotherapy drug. This is called combination chemotherapy. The drugs can be administered differently, either by injecting into a muscle, injected under the skin, injected into a vein or taken orally. The most common method of Chemotherapy Treatment used is intravenous injection or drug injected into a vein. Chemotherapy drugs are absorbed in the bloodstream, making it easier for the medicine to flow around the body.

  3. A doctor will decide on the type and dosage of chemotherapy depending on the points below: ● The type of cancer ● Organ affected by cancer ● If cancer has spread to other organs ● State of cancer cells under microscopic vision ● Age and health of the person

  4. Following are the types of cancer treatment chemotherapy: ● Alkylating Agents: The alkylating agents are the most active in the resting phase of a cancer cell, and they act directly on the DNA. They are used to treat slow-growing cancer. It is used to treat Leukaemia, Lymphoma, Lung Cancer, Breast Cancer, Ovary cancer and Sarcoma. Types of drug- Busulfan, Temozolomide and Cyclophosphamide

  5. ● Anti-Metabolites: This type of chemotherapy attacks the cancer cells at a specific phase of the cell cycle. It helps in stopping the reproduction of cancer cells by eliminating the factors causing cell division. They are used in the treatment of Leukemia, Breast cancer, Intestinal tract cancer and Ovary cancer. Types of drug- Capecitabine, Gemcitabine, 5 Fluorouracil and 6 Mercaptopurine, Anti-Tumour Antibiotics: Produced from soil fungus Streptomyces, this type of drug acts during multiple phases of the cell cycle.

  6. ● It may be used to treat many types of cancer, particularly tumour cells. High doses can cause heart failures. Types of drug- Dactinomycin, Bleomycin, Daunorubicin and Doxorubicin. Topoisomerase Inhibitors: A type of chemotherapy drug which interferes with the Topoisomerase I and II enzymes in our body. During chemotherapy, these enzymes can control and manipulate the structure of the DNA if necessary. They are used for treating Leukaemia, Lung cancer, Ovarian cancer, Gastrointestinal cancer and other cancers. Sometimes can induce second cancer called Acute Myeloid Leukaemia within three years.

  7. Types of drug- Etoposide, Irinotecan and Topotecan. ● Mitotic Inhibitors: Derived from natural plant sources, this drug helps in Mitosis, the division of the mother cell into two identical daughter cells. May cause painful nerve damage. They are used for treating Myeloma, Lymphoma, Leukemia Breast cancer and Lung cancer. Types of drug- Docetaxel, Eribulin, Ixabepilone, Paclitaxel and Vinblastin. ● Hormonal agents: This type of drugs do not kill the cancer cells but cut off supply to destroy the cell. Steroids with other chemotherapy drugs are used to reduce the swelling of the brain and spinal tumours.

  8. Corticosteroid hormones are used to treat Leukemia, Multiple Myeloma and Lymphoma. Types of drug- Prednisone and Dexamethasone Sex hormones are used to control Breast, Uterus and Prostate cancers. Types of drug- Tamoxifen and Leuprolide Chemotherapy treatment could kill more cancer cells if the doses are higher, however, maximizing the dosage could result in severe side effects while lowering the dosage to minimize the side effects will reduce the chances of success.

  9. Sometimes chemotherapy can alone treat and cure cancer cells. If a cure is not possible, chemotherapy can help minimize the discomfort and slow down the progression of cancer to prolong the affected person’s life.
