  2. Introduction Help! All the letters fell off the coconut tree and they are all confused. They do not know their sounds or where they belong in the alphabet. Can you help?

  3. Task You will become ABC experts! As the letter detective, you will find the beginning and ending letter sounds missing in words. The letterjudge will say, “Order in the court!”, and put all the letters in the correct ABC order. Finally, the artist will draw a picture and write the beginning and ending sounds they hear in that word. You will have a partner to help you in all of these roles. Together you will help all the letters find their way back up the coconut tree!

  4. Resources • Chicka Chicka Boom Boom book. • Computers with Internet access. • Popsicle sticks prepared with each student’s name.

  5. Process • Listen to the teacher read the book, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault. • The teacher will use popsicle sticks with each student’s name to choose partners and assign roles to begin this WebQuest. • Once you and your partner have completed a role, show the teacher and then you will be instructed to move on to the next role. There are three roles in all. This WebQuest could take 3 days to complete (1 day for each role). • Click on your role to begin the WebQuest. After completing all of your roles, you will become ABC experts! Letter Detective Letter Judge Artist

  6. Letter Detective • Hello Letter Detectives! Your job is to find the missing beginning and ending letter sounds in words. Have fun! • Click on the ABC picture to go to the ABC Game website. • Click on the green start button to play the game! Find the picture that matches each beginning letter sound. • 2. Click on the racing flag picture to go to the Letter Sound Dash game website. • Click on the number 2 to play the game against your partner. Type in your names and begin the game! Find the beginning letter sound for each picture. • 3. Click on the Ohio picture to go to your next job. • Follow the directions for the InfOhio Learning Activity. You will find the beginning and ending sounds of each picture. • 4. Click on the lion picture to go to the Pounce game website. • Click on the red arrow to begin the game. Listen to the word that is said to you and click on the word that matches the beginning and ending sounds you hear. This is the hardest job letter detectives, but you can do it!

InfOhio Learning Activity Search Steps: • Go to the INFOhio page at www.infohio.org • If a password is requested, see the teacher or the media specialist for this information. • Choose the Resources for Grades K-5 button. • Choose the SIRS Discoverer button. • Next to Browse Subject Tree click on the Kids Corner button. • Scroll down and select the PBS Kids link. • Click on the yellow arrows to spin the character wheel. • Click on the lion character from Between the Lions. • Click on the Games link from the top menu bar.   8. InfOhio Learning Activity Page 2 • Scroll down and select the Fuzzy Lion Ears game. • Click on the blue arrow to begin the game. • Listen to the instructions. (Make sure the sound is turned on.) • If prompted, install Shockwave Player. • Play the game by clicking on the correct letter that is missing from each word. If you need the word repeated, click on the given picture. If you need help, put the cursor on top of a letter and the letter sound will be given to you. • Click on the blue arrow to continue to the next word. • Once a round is mastered, click on the lion character beside Next Game. • Click on the blue arrow to begin the next round. There are six rounds in all. • Additional Comments on Search Process: • Shockwave is needed in order to play the games on this website. • Fuzzy Lion Ears offers 6 different rounds, or levels, to play. • This is a student-oriented lesson.   9. Letter Judge Hello Letter Judges! “Order in the court!” Your job is to put the letters back in their alphabetical order. Good luck! 1. Click on the cow to go the A. B. Cow game. • Click on the pink arrow to begin the game! Fill in the missing letters in ABC order. 2. Click on the bear to go to the Paw Park Alphabet Bears game website. • Click on the each bear and drag it to the rollercoaster in ABC order. Look at the beginning letters in each word to help you! 3. Click on the zoo picture to go to the Alphabet Zoo game website. • Click on the green start arrow to begin the game! Look at the beginning letters in each word to select which word comes 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Sing the ABC song or look at the alphabet chart if you need help!

  10. Artist • Hello Artists! You will be making pictures on the computer and writing the • beginning and ending sounds you hear in that word! Let’s begin! • 1. Click on the paint bucket and brush to go to Billy Bear’s Color and Paint website. • Click on a picture stamp and drag it onto your blank paper. • Click on the abc button on top of the paper. • Click on a color and then click on the paper in the place you would like your letters to appear. • Type the beginning and ending sounds you hear in that picture. • Press the Enter button on your keyboard 3 times. Then type your name. Back to Process page Go to Artist page 2

Artist Part 2 • On the same website, now you will draw your own picture! • Click on the red crayon button on top of the paper and click on the color you would like to use. • Click on the size of the pen you would like to use under the Pens title. • Draw your picture by holding down the mouse and dragging the pen around your paper. You can change colors at any time by clicking on a new color. • When your picture is finished, follow the directions from above to type in the beginning and ending sounds you hear in your picture and then type your name. • Ask the teacher to print out your picture by clicking File and then Print!   12. Evaluation How did you do? Answer the questions by circling the smiley face for “yes”, and the frown face for “no”.

  13. Conclusion Congratulations! You are now an ABC expert and you helped all the letters find their way back up the coconut tree! They are not confused anymore! They now know their sounds and where they belong in the alphabet. Thank you for all your help!

Teacher Notes • Teachers will need to read the directions to the students during this Web Quest. • The students may also need guidance in using a computer, especially with the Artist’s job. • Teachers may extend this Web Quest by playing letter sound Bingo or using picture cards to match with letter sounds in a pocket chart. Students could also use foam letters to practice ABC order. • A good website to gather more Chicka Chicka Boom Boom activity ideas is http://www.thevirtualvine.com/ccbb.html
