  1. Causes &Effects OF Drug Abuse

  2. CAUSES OF DRUG ABUSE • Most of the time, drug abuse starts with casual use. • Drugs can make you feel good for a while • They may make you feel energetic, self-confident, and powerful.  • Drug use changes your brain and how it works. •  If you continue to use drugs, you may develop strong cravings for them, and it may get harder to say "no" to further use.

  3. SYMPTOMS • You are more likely to have changes in your behavior than to have physical symptoms. • Changes in sleeping or eating habits, less attention to dressing and grooming,  • Up-and-down moods, a mood or attitude that is getting worse, or not caring about the future. • Anger toward others, or treating others badly.

  4. PHYSICAL SIGNS • Red eyes, a sore throat, and a dry cough. • Needle marks on the arm or other area of the body. • Small, "pinpoint" pupils in the eyes. • Losing weight without trying to, or not feeling like eating. • Changes in how well you sleep. • Seeing things that don't exist (hallucinations).

  9. TREATMENT OF DRUG ADDICTION • Treatment needs to be readily available. • Effective treatment attends to multiple needs of the individual, not just his or her drug abuse. • Counseling—individual and/or group—and other behavioral therapies are the most commonly used forms of drug abuse treatment. • Medications are an important element of treatment for many patients, especially when combined with counseling and other behavioral therapies. • Medically assisted detoxification is only the first stage of addiction treatment. • Drug use during treatment must be monitored continuously, as lapses during treatment do occur.
