Definition of Terms CAHC - complementary & alternative health care CAM -complementary & alternative medicine CAT - complementary & alternative therapies • Diagnosis, treatment and/ or prevention that complements mainstream medicine by contributing to a common whole, by satisfying a demand not met by conventional approaches or by diversifying the conceptual framework of medicine [Ernst].

  3. CAT, CAHC, and CAM • Inclusive termsrelating to • products (e.g. herbal products) • practices (e.g. acupuncture) • practitioners (e.g. naturopathic doctors)

Snapshots • 75% of Canadians using one or more NHPs in the previous 6 months– 2001 Berger Population Health Monitor • 19 % of Canadians used CAHC practitioners in 1998 & 1999 - National Population Health Survey • 10% of Canadians with cancer report some use of alternative health care -1998National Population Health Survey

Snapshots • Current survey data re CAHC utilization does not adequately reflect our demographic profile. • Many people use CAHC with limited, inadequate or incorrect information. • Poor communication about CAHC between patients and conventional health care practitioners • Poor communication between conventional health care practitioners and CAHC practitioners

  6. Jurisdictions • federal • a new regulatory framework for natural health products put in place January 1, 2004 • provincial & territorial • large variations across the country with respect to recognition of CAHC practitioners

  7. Where are we going? • cancer patients and people living with cancer • health professionals • services,programs and policy development

  8. How can we get there? • Where do we want to end up? • Are we all headed in the same direction? • Are we headed where we want to go?

Initiatives and identified needs • national network of Canadian medical programs working to implement CAHC in undergraduate curriculum • enhancing research literacy for CAHC practitioners in academic programs • CAHC information capacity: • Practitioners, e.g. pharmacists • Retailers • National organizations
