  6. What I want to be when I grow up... Biological Sciences Kyle Lennemann

  7. Job Description • Provide technical knowledge and assistance in wildlife and plant ecology, habitat management, range and forest health, nonnative invasive species and noxious weeds, and threatened, endangered, and sensitive species. • Review environmental assessments and environmental impact statements and makes recommendations to ensure that botanical, rangeland health, riparian and forest resources, and ecosystem integrity are adequately addressed and considered, and serve as backup to the wildlife biologist for reviewing wildlife, habitat, and subsistence portions of the same documents.

  8. Education & training • A degree in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

  9. Job outlook & availibility • Employment of biological scientists is expected to increase much faster than the average for all occupations although there will continue to be competition for some basic research positions. • Employment of biological scientists is projected to grow 21 percent over the 2008—18 decade, much faster than the average for all occupations, as biotechnological research and development continues to drive job growth. Biological scientists enjoyed very rapid employment gains over the past few decades—reflecting, in part, the growth of the biotechnology industry.

  10. salaries • Median annual wages of zoologists and wildlife biologists were $55,290 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $43,060 and $70,500. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $33,550, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $90,850.

  11. Why this profession? • I chose this profession because I have always had a passion for the outdoors and I love spending my time outside. With this career I can help better the environment, habitat, and wildlife while doing something I can wake up and look forward to everyday.

  12. Steve Irwin (crocodile hunter) • Irwin was a passionate conservationist and believed in promoting environmentalism by sharing his excitement about the natural world rather than preaching to people. He was concerned with conservation of endangered animals and land clearing leading to loss of habitat. He considered conservation to be the most important part of his work: “I consider myself a wildlife warrior. My mission is to save the world's endangered species.” Irwin bought large tracts of land in Australia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the United States, which he described as "like national parks" and stressed the importance of people realizing that they could each make a difference.

  13. Chadron State College • Chadron State College is a four-year public college in the Nebraska State College System in Chadron, Nebraska. The college is located in the northern part of the Nebraska Panhandle, in the Pine Ridge area. • Chadron State College offers more than 50 majors leading to bachelor’s degrees and professional studies options. Pre-professional programs in the health sciences are available, including the Rural Health Opportunities Program conducted jointly with the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

  14. University of Nebraska- Lincoln • The University of Nebraska–Lincoln (commonly referred to as Nebraska, UNL or NU) is a public research university located in the city of Lincoln in the U.S. state of Nebraska. It is the state's oldest and largest university and the flagship university of the University of Nebraska system. • Its athletic program, called the Cornhuskers, is a member of the Big Ten Conference. The UNL football team has won 46 conference championships and five national championships since 1890. The women's volleyball team has won three national championships along with eight other appearances in the Final Four.[7] The Husker football team plays its home games at Memorial Stadium, selling out every game since 1962.
