  3. INTRODUCTION

  4. According to Malaysian Road Safety Department(JKJR),3.9% road death increase in 2008 compared to the previous year. Road signs represent one of the most common devices for controlling traffic. They help in regulate, warn, and as a guidance to road users (Tamar & David 2006)

  5. METHODOLOGY JUSTIFICATION

  6. 1. To increase awareness and ethic driving on road. 2. To decrease road accident risk. 3. To improve the knowledge about road signs among the student. 4. To know the student comprehension about the road signs.

  7. LITERATURE REVIEW

  8. Definition of road sign Sign : Indicates that something exist or may happen that you can find or see Road : a hard surface built for vehicles to travel on Road Sign : a sign near road giving information or instructions to drivers. (Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary 7th Edition)

  9. General definition: A piece of wood, paper or metal that has writing or picture on it that gives you information, instruction and a warning. (Ahmad Nazri, 2005) Specific definition: Used to give information about the location of either the driver or possible destinations and are considered a subset of informative sign group. (Ross & Alan, 1992)

  10. Types of sign board 1) Law sign board- no entry, speed zone, stop 2) Warning sign board- dangerous bend road, slippery road, accident spot 3) Direction sign board- destination sign board, information sign board (Law T.H, 2004)

  11. Functions of Road Sign • To arrange, warn and guide the road users. • To give information about directions and roads name. • To inform the destination or places. • To inform the rules at particular place and time. (Marc Green & John Senders, 2004)

  12. OBJECTIVES

  13. GENERAL OBJECTIVES To study the understanding about road sign among the first year of FSKB’s student in UKM,KL session 2008/2009.

  14. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES To identify the student knowledge about the road signs. To observe the different level of knowledge between gender about the road signs. To observe the different level of knowledge about the road signs between student that having driving license and without driving license.

  15. To observe the different level of knowledge about the road signs among the student who live in urban area and student live in rural area. To identify the students’ sources of knowledge about the road sign.

  16. HYPOTHESIS

  17. 1. There are differences between their knowledge score and comprehension score regarding the road signs among the first year student of FSKB . 2. There are differences in their level of knowledge on road signs between gender.

  18. 3. There are differences in level of knowledge on road signs between student with and without driving license. 4. There are differences in level of knowledge on road signs between student from urban area and rural area.

  19. 5. The source of student’s knowledge on the road signs .

  30. Research Methodology

  31. Background -1st year student among 12 programs in FSKB UKM KL intake 2008/2009. -license only registered and approved by JPJ Research Design - Cross sectional study

  32. Sampling Method • Population target - UKM KL student • Population sample - 1st year FSKB student intake 2008/2009 • Sample size - 192 student(calculation from sample size of selected population formula)

  33. Data Collection Method a) List name of first year students of FSKB UKM, KL are collected. b) Using stratified sampling method, we divide the student population according to gender. c) Followed by simple random sampling to distribute the questionnaire.

  34. d) Questionnaires consist of multiple choice, text open end and agreement scale (close end) test types are distribute among the samples. e) From the questionnaire, we can get the population whether having driving license or not.

  35. Analysis : The collected data from the completed questionnaire are analyze using the SPSS. The following tests will be use for this research are: a) Descriptive Test b) Independent T test c) Chi square d) Logistic Regression

  36. LIMITATION

  37. There are too many sign on road that makes respondents hard to memorize the meanings of the symbols. • There are certain that road sign are not very familiar to the respondents. • Friend’s influences which is respondents will not uses their on understanding.
