  1. Welding Design M. Anis and Winarto Department of Metallurgiy & Material Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia

  2. Design Concept

  3. Weld Joint • Depends on: • Welding Location • Preparation needed, welding equipment used, and • Application • The basic weld joint consists of: • Butt joint, • Lap joint , • T-joint, • edge and • corner

  4. Terminologies • Joint design identifies, “the shape , dimensions, and configuration of the joint • The individual workpieces of a joint are called members . • Three types members : nonbutting member, butting member , and splice member • A buttingmember is “a joint member that is prevented, by the other member from movement in one direction perpendicular to its thickness dimension” • A non-butting member is “a joint member that is free to move in any direction perpendicular to its thickness dimension • A splice member is “ the work piece that spans the joint in a spliced joint

  5. Types of Welds • Many welds can be made by various types of joints • Factors to be consider in choosing joint geometry and weld types: • accessibility to the joint for welding • type of welding process being used • suitability to the structural design • cost of welding

  6. Types of Weld • groove, • fillet, • plug, • slot, • stud, • spot, • projection, • seam, • back or backing weld, • surfacing and • flange.

  7. Groove Welds • Square-groove • Scarf • V-groove • Bevel-groove • U-groove • J-groove • Flare-v-groove • Flare-bevel-groove
