  3. Explorer’s Family • Joliet’s dad died when he was six • His mom married a successful merchant

  4. Education • Studied hydrography (charting bodies of water) • When he was in school at Jesuit school he studied Latin, Greek, math, and geography. • Both Joliet and Marquette played the flute and trumpet.

  5. Reasons for exploration • France wanted furs for hats and coats, riches, spices, larger empires and to expand Christianity.

  6. Countries involved • France This is the France that funded the exploration of Joliet and Marquette. This is a picture of New France.

  7. Major Accomplishments • First European to travel along the Mississippi River from the Great Lakes. Introduced fur trade to Native Americans.

  8. Interesting Facts • Joliet and Marquette traveled in wood canoes. • They communicated with Native Americans • When they traveled, Joliet was glad to see new places.
