PS BEAM LOSS • ACEM (Al Cathode Electron Multiplier Tube) • Isat=100mA (Average anode current)(6.107particles in the ACEM/10ms) • Integration mode (fixed Gain)+ADC • Integration mode +Analog acquisition. (OASIS) • -800V<Vp<-1100V • Video (display 8 bits) + Survey (read out 12 bits using 8MSB, every 100ms) CPS_BL SYSTEM

  6. CURRENT HV Pb IN/OUT CALIBRATION • Every BL is tested in Lab. with a radioactive source (Cs137).We read the Idark(N) and the Isource(S) for several HV values. The signal adjustment is made for the nominal HV. If the ratio S/N is too large, the BL has to be changed. • All the calibration is done in a dedicated test bench, designed in collaboration with SG-RP and BI-ML. • Manpower: 2 persons/6-8 weeks CALIBRATION DATA CPS_BL SYSTEM

  8. CALIBRATION CPS (III) • About 5% of monitors has to be changed every year (ratio S/N under the limit). • 5-10% has to be relocated. • Loss of gain in the oldest monitors. • Electronics: OK. • Malfunctioning is mainly due to monitors aging CPS_BL SYSTEM

  9. MAIN PROBLEMS • Old system: 1980. • Performance limited by the electronics. • No spares for electronics: obsolete components. • Obsolete CAMAC Racks. • Every detector has to be dismantled and calibrated every year. • Non standard system: different from SPS and LHC. CPS_BL SYSTEM

MEASUREMENTS SPS (II) • Some problems (HT Cable, noise,GND) in 10 BL over 287. • Only 5 IC were replaced (extraction lines, high radioactive places) because the gas gain changed (>20% after 20 years of operation) . • Quite uniforms measurements in the whole SPS. • Electronics: OK. • The malfunction is mainly due to network cable failures. LHC-IC TEST ON PS • Two chambers installed on the S16 of the PS (August 2007) • One in parallel with the beam pipe. • One perpendicular to the beam pipe, on the magnet. • Data taken to compare it with the actual BL system (with the same electronics or directly). • New position needs to be decided CPS_BL SYSTEM

  17. BUDGET • Signal Cables: re-used with adaptors. • HV Cables : re-used (Main distribution changed on 2006) • Electronics: new • Detector: new (LHC type) • Mechanics: new (LHC type) ESTIMATED BUDGET: 250000 CHF CPS_BL SYSTEM

PLANNING IF LHC ISSUES ALLOWS US, DURING 2008…. • We are going to install and test: • 8-16 IC’s in the PS. • LHC Electronics and Software in the b.368. • The threshold comparator program and the combiner program needs a modification but the Technical specification documenthas to be done before the software modification (with ABP and OP). …AND MAYBE DURING 2009 WE CAN INSTALL A NEW BL SYSTEM IN THE CPS. CPS_BL SYSTEM

SUMMARY ……The actual system works well but… • It is old. • It is not standard compared with SPS and LHC. • Detectors needs to be calibrated every year • There are not spares for electronics. • Electronics doesn't match detectors capabilities. • Not uniform within the others. • The test with the LHC-BL is quite encouraging. • …..We have to continue to work on it. CPS_BL SYSTEM
