  1. Intermediate 2 PE Structures and Strategies – Volleyball.

  2. Lesson objective • Pupils will be able to reflect on their performance and analyse strengths and weaknesses as a team. • Pupils will be able to describe a method of focussed data collection in volleyball and describe why it is appropriate.

  3. What is your teams main strength? The GAOS highlighted that 8 out of our 25 points were won from our first attack as our team has: 2 tall powerful hitters

  4. 2 Tall Powerful Hitters • Can adjust run up at the last minute to change direction of hit • Fast explosive arm action getting over the ball to bring it down quick • Frequently change the tempo of the game by using both tips and spikes to pressurise opposition defence making attacking play less predictable • Tactically aware of opposition weaknesses targeting these players with the attacking ball. • Able to time run and move in as a unit playing fake hits to add an element of surprise • Read game and can target unprotected space

  5. What is your team’s main weakness? • Weak receiver

  6. What is your main weakness when applying the 1.2.1 structure? • Weak receiver (impact on 1st attack, what is wrong with 1st touch?) • What do opposition do? • What are the players technical limitations and impact on skill? • What are the physical limitations and impact on skill? • What are the tactical limitations and impact on skill? • How is the setter affected? • How are the swing hitters affected?

  7. Weak receiver Technical • Cannot play a high, accurate dig to the setter. • Poor co-ordination and timing to anticipate the flight path of the ball and move under the ball • Contacts the ball with bent arms which results in the ball projecting out of court Tactical • Lacks the ability to make quick decisions about passing options Physical • Lacks speed to get under the ball with a low centre of gravity to dig to the setter • Lacks ME to repeatedly bend knees and push upwards to generate an effective pass.

  8. Focussed Data Collection Service reception Observation Schedule Service Reception 3 = perfect pass 2 = setter options limited 1 = setter has no options 0 = direct error Mark on the court where each 1st touch was played

  9. Service Reception Observation Schedule • 2 sets against opponents of equal ability (4-aside) • Each players’ service reception was observed • An observer marked each time the first touch was played on a scale from 0 – 3. 3 = perfect pass (high and accurate to the setter) 2 = setter options limited (setter has to move out of position to play the ball and has limited attacking options) 1 = setter has no options (ball has to be played over in 2 touches) 0 = direct error (ball played directly out of court, into the net – opponents win point straight away) • The observer also marked on a scatter graph, with a number, where each first touch was played and whether it was high or low.

  10. Why appropriate? • SROS highlights individuals’ strengths and weaknesses specifically in service reception. • Highlights the outcome and the flight path of the ball. • Written evidence which could be looked at time and time again • Could be converted to statistics hard to argue with • Objective feedback which is more reliable and non bias • Game duration provided enough information • Opposition provided a realistic setting

  11. Homework • Complete pages 48 and 49 on the strengths and weaknesses identified from your GAOS. • Complete the focussed data collection description on page 53 • Help for strengths and weakness on page 34 of the notes www.kylehigherpe.wikispaces.com
