  1. Text Features Text features are parts of your textbook that have been created to help you locate and learn information. Text features are used in designing and organizing the pages of your textbook. The title page and table of contents are text features you can find at the beginning of books. Headings, graphics, main idea boxes and bolded words are some of the text features you will find in the middle of your book. Reference pages like glossaries, indexes, and atlases are some text features you might find at the end of your book.

  2. Below is a list of text features • title page • headings • bolded or highlighted words • vocabulary boxes • main idea boxes • glossaries • footnotes • graphics (pictures, graphs, charts, etc.) • table of contents • review questions • index • atlas • chapter titles

  3. Why should you look at the text features? Looking at text features will help you know what is most important in a lesson and help you locate information quickly. Looking at the titles in the Table of Contents or on a page can quickly tell you what information you will learn about. Reference pages such as the glossary can help you find out more about a certain topic or word.

  4. How do you use text features? Knowing which text features to use and when to use them is important. The next slide can help you decide which text features to look at when you want to understand your book better.

  5. TABLE OF CONTENTS The table of contents lists the major chapters and parts of a book along with their page numbers.  The purpose of a table of contents is to help you find specific parts of the book quickly and easily.

  6. CHARTS AND GRAPHS Charts give information, show processes or make comparisons. Most charts pack lots of information in a small space. The chart is there so that you can understand the general point and then refer to it as needed again.  Use charts as a resource. Graphs present information with lines, pictures and symbols rather than words. As with a chart, a graph is shown to make a point. Read the title and any other text then try to summarize the idea of the chart.

  7. MAPS MAPS PRESENT INFORMATION IN VISUAL FORM AND SHOW WHERE SOMETHING IS OR WHERE IT HAPPENED. REMEMBER TO READ THE TITLE OF THE MAP BECAUSE IT TELLS THE MAIN IDEA.  LOOK FOR THE SCALE, WHICH TELLS YOU HOW TO READ DISTANCE. THE MAP LEGEND OR KEY TELLS YOU WHAT THE SYMBOLS ON THE MAP MEAN.

  8. BULLETED ITEMS Bulleted items are numbered or marked with a dark dot to call attention to a particular sections of the reading.

  9. GLOSSARY A glossary is an alphabetical list of key people, places, events and terms. It usually appears in the back of the textbook. Each key word is defined. All school subjects have their own specialized vocabulary terms which are vital for your understanding of the subject.

  10. INDEX   The index is found in the back of a nonfiction book. Subjects are listed in alphabetical order with page numbers.

  11. Photographs and Illustrations • Photographs and illustrations give information in a visual way. • They help tell a story. • They work with the words and headings to help teach materials. • They help the reader understand an idea from the text that was unclear.

  12. Captions • A caption explains what is shown in a picture or illustration. • Captions help the reader understand information that may or may not be in the text.

  13. Textbox • A textbox provides more information than is in the text about a topic. • A textbox can include interesting facts or important information the author wants the reader to know.

  14. HEADINGS AND TITLES The heading in a textbook announce the topics that will be covered. The first big heading is usually called the title. Heading and titles list the big ideas in the textbook and go from biggest (the title of the book) to smaller (unit headings and chapter subheadings) to the smallest (part headings).

  15. Footnotes • Footnotes happen when the author wants to give you more info about something in the text. • They’re usually used to explain things like vocabulary words or to give background information. • Footnotes are usually marked with a small superscript number like this1
