  3. Normative Ethics Theories • Deontological • no beneficiary considered • objective is to follow the rules • “rules are good” “no rule, no problem” • Good is defined as following the rules MIS331

  4. Normative Ethics Theories • Individual Consequentialist • also called egoist ethic • individual is the beneficiary • objective is to maximize good for the individual • Good is defined as happiness, well-being, fame, riches, etc. MIS331

  5. Normative Ethics Theories • Group Consequentialist • beneficiary is the social group, organization, or nation • objective is to maximize good for the group • Good is defined as survival, autonomy, ascendancy, etc. MIS331

  6. Normative Ethics Theories • Utilitarian • beneficiary is society as a whole • objective is to maximize good for the human race (or all sentient beings) • Good is defined as life, liberty, standard of living • Still Awake??? MIS331

  7. Ethics and Behavior • There exists a view that there is a dominant ethical belief that is useful in understanding behavior and can serve as a general predictor of behavior. MIS331
