  2. Teaching Steps • Ask the students to form pairs and discuss thhe questions in their books. • Bring the students’ attention to the Language Focus box and tell them that they can use the sentences and structures in the box in answering the questions.

  3. Part One Questions for Discussion (1) • What programs are shown on TV? What kind of program do you like most, soap opera, situation comedy, news or talk show? • What is reality TV? Have you watched any TV shows? • Have you heard of Survivor and Big Brother? If you have, what do you think of them? • Why are reality TV shows so popular?

  4. Part One Questions for Discussion (2) • What do you think of filming ordinary people and their everyday activities? • Are you interested in becoming a contestant in a reallity TV show? Why or why not? • Do you know any Chinese reality TV shows?

  5. Language Focus • Fictional programs include soap operas, situation comdedies, dramatic series and motion pictures made for television. • Nonfictional programs include game shows, talk shows, news, and magazine shows. • Reality TV refers to a new kind of TV program that involves ordinary people who participate in a certain contest / is ofen set on a remote island, cut off from modern civilization.

Language Focus • Reality TV has caused a big stir in many countries / has swept across the world. • Reality TV shows usually involves adventure and suspense, which appeal to viewers. • While some welcome shows like Survivor and Big Brother, others think they are boring / dull /disgusting / too contrived.
