  3. 900 Loyola students abroad each year (700 undergrad or 32.7% of graduating class—34th nationally in undergraduate participation) • Goal is 1000 undergrads • Growth will be in short term programs and in underrepresented students • Short term programing is also a national trend • Your background with Study Abroad Study abroad background

Cost – Program including Tuition, fees, airfare, etc. should not exceed $4,500 • Enrollment – minimum of 10/maximum of 25 students, second faculty, staff or graduate assistant at 15 students • Course – 1 to 3 credits, cross listed to maximize possibilities, ideally should count toward major/minor/core/engaged learning • Destination – safe and mass appeal (travel.state.gov) • Length – 10 to 14 days (first half Jan, second half May. This may affect how far you can travel) • Faculty leader – must be knowledgeable/credible with respect to destination Program Must Haves

  6. Draw Diverse students— students with underrepresented major, ethnic/racial, economic background • Destination— what works….exciting/warm/and in close proximity for a January program is ideal. May term has more flexibility • Local Partner —experienced in country partner (Brazil, Cuba, Chile, Peru, etc.) • Too close — do not replicate already established Loyola programs • Scholarship/Stipend — college/departmentdevelop $500 to $1000 per student stipend (J and May term are out of pocket for students only Alternative loans and anything left over) Program Preferences

  7. Proposal—Faculty • Program Development—Faculty/OIP • Student Recruitment/Marketing—Faculty/OIP • Admission/Enrollment/Billing—OIP • Pre-departure—OIP and Faculty (trip leader training, student orientation) • While abroad—Faculty leader is fully responsible 24/7 with OIP backstopping • After—Faculty and OIP, grades, evaluations, debrief Roles/Responsibilities

  8. Program fee collected from students covers faculty airfare, local lodging and meals, travel/health insurance, visa if needed and needed program expenses • Tuition generated covers salary for one course • Second trip leader at 15 students Cost/Payment

  9. Proposal (see packet) by 1 February • OIP available for questions/support • Follow up workshop? Prior to 1 Feb? • OIP will review proposals and notify by 1 March • Finalize and launch marketing/outreach 1 April • Lets review packet now How to do it

  10. Failure—cost too high, program too narrow, destination not of interest, faculty member not fully engaged • Success—Peter Schraeder Faculty Lead program to Tunisia; Father Mitten, Faculty Lead to Belize Success/Failure

  11. OIP will cancel programs that do not make minimum enrollment • Programs can be stand alone or add-ons for a course that would be completed during either Fall or Spring semester, with a required course trip during the J-term or May term (caution, this limits your recruiting pool with a higher chance that the program will not run) • Family members/friends of faculty leader should not travel as part of the trip may join before or after • Health and Safety trip leader training More information
