  2. Geography • Located in Southern Europe • Boot-Shaped Peninsula • 301,230 square kilometers (7,210 km2 is water) • Coastline and border of 7,600 km on the Adriatic, Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas and borders shared with France, Austria Slovenia and Switzerland.

  3. Culture • Country with the highest # of UNESCO Sites • Art, Literature, Architecture – magnificent & significant • ~ 100 000 monuments of any sort • Food, Fashion, Music, Sport, Science

  4. Politics • Parliamentary government based on a proportional voting system. • Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of the Republic • President of Italy Giorgio Napolitano • The judicial system is based on modified versions of Roman Law. • One of the Founding Members of the European Community, the European Union and the North Atlantic treaty Organization

  5. Economy • Market economy • Unemployment rate 12.5% (and rising) • Ninth-largest economy in the world and firth-largest in Europe • One of the founding members of G7, G8, and Eurozone • Used to be a leading country in world trade and exports. (not so much anymore)
