  2. Plot 1 :Summary • Hagar remains strong in the situation by thinking about home - Manawaka. • She notices a boy and girl playing - but they quarreled when the girl became domineering. She wants to warn the girl.!!!! • When she speaks, they become frightened and run away, from “a fat old woman”. • She tries unsuccessfully to defecate in a quiet spot in the forest. • She moved to the old cannery building because the stairs are too much for her in the house.

  3. Plot 2 • She decided to take a box to Jess containing cherished memories of their firstborn, she found in the attic. She finds John there and becomes upset. • John’s behavior becomes more like Bram - he gets brought home drunk after a dance, by Arlene. hagar thinks this is done in mockery. • John had gotten into a fight at the dance. • hagar goes back to the coast, to Mr. Oatley’s, but returns the next summer. • Arlene and John are in love. She warns Arlene not to marry John with the notion to change him. ( Like she did with Bram)

  4. Plot 2 - Continued • She also tells John that Arlene’s father’s family, the Simmons were “nothing to write home about”. Her mother did ironing for money. • hagar overhears Arlene tell John she wants to get married and have children. Then they had sex as she, unbeknownst to them, listens. • She seems upset at the joy they find in the act. • hagar and Lottie plot to have the two separated by having Arlene go away. Ontario • hagar objects to Arlene’s regular visits to the house. John doesn’t bring her anymore for a month.
