  4. Advantages to Groups • Through synergy, groups provide more input than individuals • Cohesive groups provide support and commitment • Groups meet people’s interpersonal needs: • Inclusion, control, affection

  5. Managing Groups • Balance group and individual needs • Balance task and maintenance roles • Task is job to do • Maintenance is tending to positive social climate • Personal goals that do not meet the goal of the group are called “Negative Roles” • Members must learn flexibility

  6. Avoid “Groupthink”! • Overconfidence • Failure to think critically • Hold stereotypes of outsiders

  7. Phases of Groups • Orientation • Tension, tentative communication, formal, try to find a “place” • Conflict • Secondary tension as they disagree and struggle to find leadership; noisy, argumentative • Emergence • Tension dissipates, leadership issues are resolved • Reinforcement • Bolster their decisions with favorable comments and self-congratulation

  8. Roles you might see: • Gate-keeper (keeps communication moving) • Encourager (offer compliments) • Harmonizer (smooth differences) • Initiator (offer ideas) • Information seeker (ask questions) • Group observer (offer feedback)

  9. Negative Roles • Withdrawer • Joker • Blocker • Dominator
