Project Management • TERENA’s Secretary General, Karel Vietsch, is an observer on the DANTE Board of Directors and is a non-voting member of the GN2 Project Executive • TERENA’s President, Dorte Olesen is also a non-voting member of the GN2 Project Executive • TERENA Secretariat staff lead some of the activities in the project and participate in more.

  3. NREN Development and Support(NA4) • Bert van Pinxteren leads NA4 1.1.1 that produces ‘TheTERENA Compendium of Research and Education Networking in Europe’ • Valentino Cavalli leads NA4 0.1.1.2 that provides assistance to research and education networking in less-advanced regions

TERENA Compendiumof Research and Education Networking in Europe(NA4 1.1.1) • provides a benchmarking tool for the national level of research and education networking by collecting and publishing data on the status of different countries in and around Europe • begun in 2000 – this is the sixth edition of the printed version • since 2005, it is part of the GN2 project • available from the website in pdf format • data per country is on the TERENA website: www.terena.nl/compendium/

  5. Assistance to Less-advanced Regions (NA4 1.1.3) • addresses the challenge of the Digital Divide • provides assistance to NRENs and local networking organisations in the less-advanced regions in the area • supported by a Development Support Advisory Panel composed of senior representatives of NRENs • Country needs assessments: Albania, Morocco, Moldova and Romania • Bulgaria is planned and Malta will be done in October

  6. EARNEST (NA5)(Education And Research Networking Evolution Study) • a foresight study which started on 1 March 2006 following on the SERENATE Project. • planned to be completed by 31 October 2007. • lead by TERENA Secretary General, Karel Vietsch and supported by many members of the Secretariat staff • will provide policy inputs to keep the evolution of European research networking at the forefront of worldwide developments, and enhance the competitiveness of the European Research Area • will also prepare for the planning of the development of the research and education networking infrastructure and services after the completion of GN2

  7. Coordination of RTD Activities (NA6) • done through the TERENA (technical) Task Forces • co-ordination and the pooling of resources and technical knowledge among GN2 participants as well as with other groups that are active in technical development work • provides forums where persons active in the GN2 project can discuss the progress and results of their work with experts from a wider European community and receive their feedback • provide forums to generate and discuss plans for new technical development work

  8. GN2 Workshop at TNC (NA7) • a (distributed) workshop was held at TNC 2005 and TNC 2006 • also planned for TNC 2007 • presentations included within the sessions per topic to increase exposure • participate in the Programme Committee for the conference

  9. NEW!Training Courses (NA 8) • will be led by DANTE; • will give training courses and workshops of the new tools and applications developed in the GN2 project; • courses will be organised by TERENA and will begin late in 2006 • may provide opportunities for personnel in the developing NRENs to work for a short time at the established NRENS to gain experience
