Why Is Cassis Still Here? • Most information available on Cassis discs is also on the web, however: • It contains some data not on the web • It provides a number of functionalities not available on the web • It provides a backup for times when web is not available • Not everyone has access to the web

  18. Cassis2 User Interface • Uses the BRS/Search engine also used with WEST, EAST, and Full Text databases on web • Three search screens with varying degrees of difficulty of use • Online help system provided • Separate results screen • Many features are not available on the web

  20. Short Form Search Screen • Default search screen • Easiest to use - intended for general public/ new users • Steps in search: • Select field from drop-down boxes • Fill in text boxes • Select operator from drop-down boxes if more than one term or field • Hit Enter or click Search

  22. Form Search Screen • Next degree of difficulty • Can combine multiple fields – more than 2 • Steps in search: • Select fields from drop-down boxes • Enter search terms in text boxes • Select operator if more than one term or field • Hit Enter or click Search

Command Search Screen • Most difficult search screen – most unforgiving • Boolean, command language • Must use .field. format, but you can use field and operator buttons rather than typing • Dates must be entered in proper format (Tip: Use Short Form and Form Search for dates) • Must use “Search” button - can’t use Enter! • On-screen help by field

  26. Results Screen • Top window displays list of document numbers and patent titles/ trademarks/ assignees (depending on database used) • Lower window displays the complete record corresponding to list entry above • User saves, prints, exports, and changes display view from this screen

Cassis2’s Special Features • Index Browse • Search terms in each field are indexed; these indexes are browsable using the Index feature • Select Index from Tools Menu or click on icon • Type in text box to scroll to desired term • Select search terms from the index to insert into search screen • Allows you to determine proper input format for field and also misspellings or variations of search terms

Special Features • Selecting Documents from Results Screen • Yellow box displayed to the left of all entries in results list in upper window • Click in the box to select that document • Select multiple documents • Print, save or export these particular documents • TIP: Create custom display style or sort prior to selecting documents – display styles and sorting delete selections!

More Special Features • Printing Search Results: • Print single or multiple documents • Print one or all items in the results list • Select specific items or documents to print • Saving Search Results: • Saves the record as displayed on results screen (with field titles) • Save using the formats listed above under printing

  32. Special Features • Exporting Search Results • Export using delimiters (| - comma – tab) or SGML (tagged data). Delimited data can be imported to a spreadsheet • Export single, multiple or selected documents • Exported data do not include field titles as with saved data

Steps in Saving Records • When the search is complete, select Save from the File Menu, then select: • All documents • Current document • Selected documents (those selected by clicking in the yellow box) • All items • Current item • Selected items (those selected by clicking in the yellow box)

  37. Exporting & Saving Cassis2 Records • Once files are saved or exported, the files can be written to a CD-RW in the E:\ drive. To do this: • Open Windows Explorer or My Computer • Locate the Z:\ drive and the folder(s) or file(s) to save

  38. Exporting With Cassis2 • To view the results of the file, you can: • Open the file in a text reader • Open the file in Excel, Access, or another similar program

  39. Exporting With Cassis2 • On the second window, click in the “Other” box in the Delimiter section • Type the Pipe (|) symbol in the text box • Click “Next” • On the third window, select “General” column data format • Click “Finish” • Your imported data is displayed in a spreadsheet

  41. Special Features • Custom Display Style Sheets • User can create a special display style for saving, printing or exporting • Custom styles can include desired fields in any order • A mailing label format is provided on Patents BIB and Attorney/Agent Roster

  42. Special Features • Search History • While performing search, entire session is being saved • Reuse search statements during current session • Save and reuse individual search statements or entire history in later session
