  1. Curriculum and Methods in Liberal Studies

  2. Domains of a Curriculum Teachers Work load Contents Assessments School mission Students Abilities Learning Activities Government Instruction Financial Consideration

  3. Resources from EDB (OLE) • http://cd1.edb.hkedcity.net/cd/lwl/ole/01_intro_01.asp

  4. A Normal Secondary School Calendar • 180+ school days • About 36 weeks out of 52 weeks of a school year • Cycle based / Week days based • Time for a lesson (e.g. 45min) • How many lessons a day? (7 lessons per day)

  5. Subject Disciplines in Schools • Languages • Chinese (including Putonghua) • English • Mathematics • Liberal Studies • Other subjects (X) • Physics, Chemistry, Econ., Eng. Lit, etc. • Extra Curriculum activities

  6. Subject Disciplines in Schools(weighting allocation) • Languages (40%) • Chinese (including Putonghua) (20%) • English (20%) • Mathematics (15%) • Liberal Studies (15%) • Other subjects (X) (20%) • Physics, Chemistry, Econ., Eng. Lit, etc. • Extra Curriculum activities (10%)

  7. Example • 180 school days x 15% LS contents • 27 school days to teach LS • We have 6 hours a day • That means 27 x 6 = 162 hours of LS contents

  8. Contact hours vs. Notional Learning hours • Contact hours • Face-to-face lectures/tutorials • Notional Learning hours • The amount of time an average learner is expected to take to complete all the learning and achieve the learning outcomes. • All learning relevant to the learning outcomes should be considered in estimating the notional learning time. • Notional Learning hours = Contact hours + Self study hours + others

  9. Notional Learning hours • Is it Unlimited? • What is the maximum? • Deducting the time for rest and other activities, we suppose that we will have 44 hours a week • Suppose that we study 42 weeks out of 52 weeks • i.e. 42 x 44 = 1848 hours of max. notional learning hours

  10. A simple guess • We have, • 1848 max. notional learning hours • 15% of Liberal Studies Content • 1848 x 15% ≈ 277 hours of notional learning hours for LS contents • 162 contact hours of LS contents • a 1:1.7 ratio for contact hours to notional learning hours

  11. How to allocation your hours on Liberal Studies? • Period of time (e.g. 1 academic year) • What kind of abilities that you want your students to learn? • Mission and direction of school which related to the discipline. • How many domains? • Consistence between domains, chapters, topics. • Adjust the time of study of each topics.

  12. Try to create a draft of your curriculum • Brain Storming for choosing some sets of content of your Liberal Studies curriculum. • Categorize the contents in different groups. • Think about the coherence of those groups of contents. (Learning Sequence) • Eliminate some contents depend on the period of time of study. • Any restriction on the learning activities for the teaching team.
