  1. LEAKED MEMO ON SUPPORT FROM WOMEN FOR THE COALITION GOVERNMENT RIGHT AND LEFT PERSPECTIVES ON EARLY YEARS POLICY HTTP://WWW.GUARDIAN.CO.UK/POLITICS/INTERACTIVE/2011/SEP/13/LEAKED-MEMO-WOMEN-COALITION-GOVERNMENT#DOCUMENT/P1

  2. The coalition government’s unpopularity with women • The coalition government has proved to be extremely unpopular with women; consistently decreasing over their term. • The leaked ‘restricted – policy’ document which we will read through this session indicates a desire to claw back female voters. • The document outlines the broadly left wing policies they have axed, followed by the broadly right wing policies they aim to introduce.

  3. The document • The document assumes that the main concerns of women voters will be themselves and their families, rather than policy which may not be directed at them. • It also assumes that women can be won back by what is commonly referred to as ‘spin’. I.e. making it look as if you are doing something more or different to what you are actually doing. • The right wing logic at work in the piece, in following with our discussion last week, focuses on highlighting women’s responsibilities and significance.

  4. Symbolic concessions • Most of the prospective policy discussed in the leaked document focuses on mainly symbolic rather than ‘real’ concessions. For example, there is no increase of money to mothers and families in real terms. • The concessions given, such as women being the default recipient of universal credit, are, even in their own words, ‘largely symbolic.’ • Such moves do more to highlight the ability for right wing ideals to include women than to actually do anything for them directly.

  5. What is cut • On the other hand, the policies which have been cut almost all effect on women in terms of standards of living directly related to finance. • The support for women from the right wing perspective is therefore symbolic rather than financial and focused on emphasising individual responsibility rather than a supporting structure. • This is all indicative of a move away from left wing social policy to right wing social policy.

  6. questions • How do you feel about this document? • Do you feel this kind of symbolic manipulation or ‘spin’ is unethical or simply a part of what a government must do? (the left wing is certainly not innocent of spin) • Given that these views are more about convincing women that they can fit into a right wing co-ordinated society, rather than actually doing anything ‘real’ for them, do you think these policy moves would help sway women towards supporting the right wing ideals of the government? • How do you feel this document outlines the right and left wing views on the early years?
