  2. What is a Tag Question? • ATag Questionis a small question added to the end of a statement. Statement + Tag question • Tag Questions are use for two reasons: • To check for correctness • To check for agreement When do use a Tag Question?

  3. Checking for Correctness. • Sometimes when we make a statement we want to know if we are right or wrong. • Here we can use a tag question. 맞아?

  4. Examples • Mr. Lee is our teacher. (I know this is true). • Mr. Lee is our teacher, isn’t he? (I think he’s our teacher, I’m not sure) • Mary runs every day. (I know this) • Mary runs every day, doesn’t she? (I think she runs everyday, but I don’t know exactly) Tag Question Tag Question

  5. Checking for Agreement. • Sometimes when we make a statement we want to know if you agree (동의하다) or disagree (동의하지 않는다). • Here we can also use a tag question. He’s cute, isn’t he?

  6. Examples • This class is too hard, isn’t it? • (I think the class is difficult and I want to know if you think the same) • The weather wasn’t nice yesterday, was it? • (I think that the weather was bad yesterday and I think you will agree with me)

  8. Making a Tag Question • If the verb in the statement is POSITIVE(+) • the tag verb will be NEGATIVE (-) • Your mother is a doctor, • If the verb in the statement is NEGATIVE (-) • the tag verb will be POSITIVE(+). • Lazy students don’tlike to study, she? isn’t they? do

Making a Tag Question Statement Verb Pronoun • Sentence + COMMA (,) + a helping verb (do, don’t, does, doesn’t, did, didn’t, have, haven’t, has, hasn’t, can, can’t, etc.) ORthe verb TO BE (is, isn’t, are, aren’t, was, wasn’t, were, weren’t, etc.) + a pronoun (I, you, we, they, he, she, it). • Oxford is a school, isn’t it? sentence a helping verb a pronoun isn’t it? • Harvard is a good school, • Chickens can’t fly, • Cindy was late, • You’ll come to the party, • They aren’t in our class, • Mark isn’t leaving, • Your name is 수지, • We’ve met before, can they? wasn’t she? won‘t you? are they? is he? isn’t it? haven’t we?

Tag Questions with “have” Some tag questions use have as the main verb 있어 / 없어 statements • You have two sisters, • Do you have two sisters ? • He has a car, • Does he have a car? • Lisa had long hair before, • Did Lisa have long hair before? Exceptions Some tag questions are made differently (they are irregular): • I amcute, • I’mright, aren’t I? • I’mlucky, aren’t I? • Nobodycamehere, (Nobody is NEGATIVE subject, so the tag is POSITIVE). • No one was hurt, werethey? • Everyone likes pizza, • Everyone refers to many people as a single group. • So it uses a singular verb.
