  2. What is Literacy? • Mastery of the printed word • Ability to Read … and to Write • Ability to decipher/decode text & texts • The very cornerstone of education?

  3. What is Education? • Gutenberg Printing Press - 15th Century • Print, dominant for 500+ years • Compulsory Education, Act of 1872 • Heavily print based - the text book. • What about the next 500?, or even 100?

  4. Literacy for 21st Century? • Moving images, not print, dominate • EU countries now developing MIE • Working with MI ‘texts’ supports traditional literacy

  5. Moving Image Texts • Film, Video, DVD, QT, MP4 etc • Pupils & Teachers should seek to:- • Explore • Analyse • Create • Context = Cross-curricular via ICT

  6. MIE in Glasgow • Research - FLaT Project, Brechin • Partnership with Scottish Screen • Lead Practitioners • Chartered Teacher • MIE in CPD • EU-funded TITANIA Project • LT Scotland - Masterclass, SETT • MIE in ITE … that means YOU!!

  7. Literacy for 21st Century? • Start teaching career in 2010 • Mid-point 20 years by 2030 • Possible retirement in 2050 • Final class = P1, D.O.B = 2045 • Assuming 80 year life expectancy • Pupils you will teach will live until 2125 i.e. ..22nd Century!
