  1. Chapter 1The World of Life Science

  2. Section 2Scientific Methods

  3. Scientific Methods- the ways in which scientists follow steps to answer questions and solve problems. • The steps are: What Are Scientific Methods?

  4. Ask a question • Make observations • Form a hypothesis • Test the hypothesis • Analyze the results • Draw conclusions • Communicate Results

  5. Remember, asking a question is the most important step in the scientific process. • Observation- Any information you gather by using one or more of your five senses. • What are your five senses? Ask a Question…

  6. Hypothesis- a possible explanation or answer to a question. • A good hypothesis can always be tested. • A hypothesis is written in one of two ways… • If/then • I think/because Form a Hypothesis

  7. Cloud cover may cause low energy levels. • Video games may cause violence. • Eating too much salt may cause dehydration. • Oil may cause acne. • Breathing through helium may cause a high pitched voice. Practice writing these statements as hypotheses…

  8. Controlled experiment-tests only one factor at a time and consists of a control group and one or more experimental groups. • Variable- the factor that differs in an experimental group. • An experiment should only test one factor. Test the Hypothesis
