  1. Mrs. Sarah Huntington Third GradeSeptember 4, 2019 Welcome to Back-to-School Night • Read the paper your child left you and test yourself by filling in what you think are their favorites. Leave the paper on their desk and write them a quick note. They’ll be excited to read your note and your guesses tomorrow morning! • Please use the white Back to School Night Survey to voice any questions, concerns or information you would like me to know about your child. Place it in the basket on the side table on your way out tonight, or finish it at home and send it in with your child in a sealed envelope. Thank you for coming!

Goals for My Students • To achieve greater independence, responsibility, and organization • To enjoy learning with a focus on practice makes PROGRESS, and self-reflection • To become a resilient, confident learner who is willing to take risks and meet challenges in his/her learning • To understand his/her strengths and weaknesses • To confidently use verbal communication – a life skill! Time to unleash the superhero in all of them!

Philosophy and Practices I offer a structured environment where students feel their teacher knows and cares about them.I strive to help each student receive what he or she needs to be successful and love school. I want the children to feel there is no problem we can’t solve if we talk about it and work together. A little success leads to lots more! 3-H’s Motto All for one and one for all! We are a team!

  5. More About Responsibility How can you help? Be their guide on the side but let them make mistakes! An Important Third Grade Goal is Independence: • Assignment book • Responsibility and helping/chores • Primarily work alone on homework • Students should check off completed homework and pack it in their school bag. • Please do not bring forgotten items to school–HELP THEM GROW! Missed Homework Slips and Letters Home on a Bad Day RELAX – It’s normal

Call the office! • Email: it can wait up to 24 hours. • “Notes From Home” Dismissal: • Please send a note for all dismissal changes • Students may only ride a different bus for child care purposes. Absences: • Missed work -Family Trips district policy • PSSA testing window for Language Arts & Math: April 20 - May 1, 2020 • Spring vacation is March 24 – April 1

  7. My policy is a no tears policy!Council Rock School District’s policy: 30 minutes per night in third grade. Parental support is important. However, your child should be able to complete his or her homework independently. If that is not the case, or your child is taking much longer, please contact me. Homework Homework Assignments are similar each week and changes are noted in the assignment book. Bridges Math Program • Homework Sheets • Memorization of basic facts (+ - x ÷) through home practice using flash cards and website practice.

Additional Homework Information to Help at Home Minimum of 15 Minutes of Independent Reading M-Th+ • Students must log About 5 Reading Response Journal entries per marking period • The students write a well thought out paragraph response to a prompt. • The book they write about is their Independent Reading Book. The Book Baggie holds: • Blue “Nightly Reading Log” • An Approved Independent Reading Book • Reading Response Journal (RRJ) – • Instructions on inside cover of the RRJ • I go over the prompt in class • Given a week prior and expectation is a focused paragraph in final draft form. Spring Projects: Biography Bash Market Day (No food products allowed) Joe Smith Book Baggie RRJ Due Tuesday

Important Odds n’ Ends • Instrumental Music Lessons: • Rotating schedule:misslearning time. • Responsible for classroom work • Schedule is sent home. • Healthy Snacks:1:30 PM • 1 snack - approximately 5 - 10 minutes. • Birthday celebrations at snack time • Please provide treats that are easy to serve Please Remember: We are a Nut-Free classroom. Send labels for store bought and homemade treats.

More Important Odds n’Ends • Nurse visits: • Bathroom visits: • Emergency School Closings: please make sure your child knows where to go • Cell phones must be off and in back packs during the school day and on bus. • Electronics (Gameboys, Ipods, etc.) are not allowed in school or on the bus, so… maybe just leave them at home. • E-readers must be approved using permission form in SFE e-Friday Folder

In Grade 3Bridges in Mathematics, instructional time focuses on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100; (2) developing understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with numerator 1); (3) developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area; and (4) describing and analyzing two‑dimensional shapes • Bridges in Mathematics curriculum equips teachers to fully implement the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in a manner that is rigorous, coherent, engaging, and accessible to all learners. • The curriculum focuses on developing students’ deep understandings of mathematical concepts, proficiency with key skills, and ability to solve complex and novel problems. Plant Growth and Development Matter and Motion In the first three investigations, students learn about motion, magnetism and gravity. In the fourth investigation, students move from energy to matter.
