  3. Plate Tectonic Setting of Western Canada The Juan de Fuca plate lies offshore between Vancouver Island and northern California. Complex sub-plates are present at its north and south ends. The San Andreasfault extends to the south and the Queen Charlotte fault to the north. The Cascadia volcanoesare limited to the region where the Juan de Fuca plate is under thrusting the continent. 4

  5. Disaster Response Routes • Disaster Response Routes are NOT evacuation routes. They will be activated as needed during an event and it is recommended that everyone listen to the radio and television for public service announcements regarding emergency routes and their uses.    6

  7. Personal Preparedness Discussion & plans with family members Your partner/spouse plans Your children’s school plans Staff/family car kits Attend a Neighbourhood or Personal Preparedness Course (contact your local emergency management office – www.nsemo.org) 8

  8. Car Kits extra food and water sleeping bag rubber boots/ comfortable footwear extra clothes, for warmth and dryness hygiene products, including toothbrush, contact lens supplies, medication, etc. flashlight, first aid kit, coins, out-of-area contact person card & map of area 9

  9. What supplies should you consider to store? X What do you have on hand? What do you need for 72+ hours? 10

  10. Emergency Water Supply • 4 litres per person per day (recommended - enough for 5 days) • Plus 1 litre per day for each pet • Bottled water – look for expiry dates on bottle neck! 11

  11. Emergency Food Supply • Ready to eat foods • Foods requiring little or no water • Foods with at least a 6 month shelf life • Variety of foods • Healthy snacks • Dry food for pets! 12

  12. Natural Gas • Turn off gas ONLY if you smell gas or hear a hissing sound of gas escaping or if you see a broken or disconnected gas line • DO NOT attempt to turn gas back on – call FortisBC 13

  14. Non Structural Hazards Identify potential hazards, then… • Relocate • Remove • Re-Anchor or • Beware Deal 1st with furniture or objects that pose the most threat. 15

  15. Plug in telephones Smartphones/cells - text message - chargers? Emails messages Idea – add photos on your smartphone of children & family Communication

  16. Student Release/Parent Reunification KEEP SAFE & Check your home 1st before bringing children home! Boundary’s Elem’s drill will be coming!! Most important piece of the school plan… Student Release forms completed by parents annually & then filed into binders alphabetically Release students back into the community in a safe & orderly manner to pre-planned authorized adults (better emotionally for students) Requires less resources- staff & supplies 17
