  1. Studies in Ephesians“The Walk of Christians in the Church”Ephesians 4:1-16 Our walk as Christians demonstrates unity, service & maturity in the Triune God and through the local church.

Ephesians 4:1-16 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8 This is why it says: “When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.”

Ephesians 4:1-16 9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

  5. Walk in a worthy way. (vv. 1-6) • with humility (v. 2) • with gentleness (v. 2) • with patience (v. 2) • in love (v. 2) • in the bond of peace (v. 3) NOTE: The result of these qualities as part of our walk is the UNITY of the Spirit.

  6. The UNITY of the Spirit is then seen in: • one body (v.4) • one Spirit (v.4) • one hope (v.4)…of your calling-What’s that? • one Lord (v. 5) • one faith (v. 5) • one baptism (v. 5) • one God & Father of all (v. 6)…over, through, in all!

  7. Walk in a gifted way. (vv. 7-12) • only source of grace is Christ (v. 7) • only source of gift(s) is Christ (v. 7) • the victorious Christ defeated foes in order to give gifts (v. 8 & cf. Col. 2:13-15) • the victorious Christ led gifted men (& women) to give to the church (vv. 8-11) • the purpose of Christ giving spiritual gifts/gifted people to the ch.-equipping believers, so they do the work of service, for the Body to be built up (vv. 11-12)

  8. Walk in a mature way. (vv. 13-16) • results in unity of the faith (v. 13) • results in true knowledge of Jesus (v. 13) • results in full measure of the stature of Christ (v. 13) • results in not being childish in theological truth (v. 14) • results in speaking the TRUTH IN LOVE (v. 15) • results in the whole Body being fitted together & each part properly working for the growth of the Body so the Body is built up IN LOVE (v.16)

  9. WHAT IS MY RESPONSE? • Preserve unity at PBF. • Serve faithfully at PBF. • Sunday School, Nursery, Greeter, Grounds, Men, Women, Building, Special Events, Refreshments, Other • Keep growing at PBF.
