  1. I Serve Africa – Training5th February 2009 Mentorship For Ministry. Mr.Martin Kiarie.

  2. What is Mentorship • It is a relationship which gives two people an opportunity to share professional and personal experiences that results with growth. • It is based on encouragement, constructive comments, openness, mutual trust, respect and willingness to share and learn. It forms horizontal relationships from which both the mentor and the mentored can benefit.

  3. The Duggar family are an Arkansas family, headed by Jim Bob Duggar and Michelle Duggar, who have been repeatedly featured in the news and entertainment media for having seventeen children. .On May 9, Michelle Duggar announced on the Today Show that she is pregnant with their 18th child and is due on New Years Day 2009.

  4. Duggars raise their children using the buddy system, in which an older sibling raises a younger sibling, instead of the parents doing it themselves. Older buddy "will get the younger ones' meals.", "They help them with their little phonics lessons and games during the day and help them practice their music lessons. They will play with them or help them pick out the color of their outfit that they want to wear that day, and just all of those types of things."

  8. Benefits Expected From Both Mentor. • Sense of Mission ( Part of Discipleship) • Opportunity to share expertise/resource. • Greater appreciation of another person/culture. • Spiritual growth & New friendship.

  9. Benefits Expected From Both Mentored • Being listened to and heard. • Improved ministry performance/impact. • Affirmation and new confidence. • Spiritual growth. • New friend and role model. • Clear plan for progress. • Ability to mentor others.

  10. Qualities of a Mentor. • 1. Personal commitment to be involved in another persons life. • 2. Respect for individuals and their abilities and their rights to make own choices in life. • 3.Ability to listen and accept different points of view.

  11. Qualities of a Mentor. • 4. Ability to empathize with another person’s struggle. • 5. Ability to see solutions and opportunities as well as barriers. • 6. Flexibility and openness

  12. What works . • 1. Learn to listen. • 2. Always aim to help them problem solve( not solve their problem) • 3. Believe in the persons ability to accomplish things. • 4. Encourage them to take small steps and celebrate small accomplishments. • 5. Be a friend.

  13. What works • 6. Have a written agreement on who does what and by when- keep good records. • 7. Highlight the mentoree’s strength and praise past good improvements. • 8.Develop clear goals which incorporate mentoree’s ideas perspectives, rationale and opinions. • 9. Ask open ended questions.

  14. What works • 10. Follow up on agreements and check progress as required. • 11. Treat information with confidentiality. • 12. Learn to take risks with them and appreciate their culture.

  15. What to Avoid. • 1. Having a rescue mentality. • 2. Lecturing your mentoree on what to do. • 3. Being judgmental • 4. Intimidating the mentoree with your vast experience. • 5. Addressing too many skills/techniques at one time.

  16. What to Avoid. • 6. Missing the subtle messages that may be communicated through body language or lack of communication. • 7. Becoming financially involved inappropriately . • 8. Keep the relationship pure.

  17. The Mentoring Process. 1.Build Rapport. -research ahead, -what is the environment of the person you will be mentoring,-get acquainted. 2.Share Expectations. - Clarify why you are both interested relationship.

  18. The Mentoring Process. 3.Observe and listen • Observe behaviors & get understanding of status quo. • Ask background questions. 4. Needs identifications. • Ask probing questions. • Aim to find out what needs to be addressed to arrive at long term solutions.

  19. The Mentoring Process. • 5.Make an action plan. • This has to be done together. • Its usually 6 to 12 months in length. • Clarify task and responsibilities are clear.

  20. The Mentoring Process. • 6. Follow up. • - Have a mid point to ensure evaluation. • - Always evaluate together to ensure ownership of the mentorship results.
