  35. Answer • The operating system is a software program that manages the components of a computer system and its resources. • Examples of operating systems are Windows Vista, XP, NT, 98, MacOS, Linux and Unix.

Patient Record Systems – for storing medical info about a patient • Patient Monitoring – blood pressure monitor, electrocardiogram (ECG) • Patient Diagnostics – X-rays, MRI scanners, CAT scans, ECG machines • Expert Systems – doctor inputs one of the patients symptoms the system then applies a set of rules and asks further questions • Patient Treatment – The IV drip, ventilators • Pacemakers - A pacemaker is a small device that's placed in the chest or abdomen to help control abnormal heart rhythms. This device uses electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate • Robot Surgery – robots perform some surgery • Cybernetics – artificial limbs • Patient Appointments - computerised appointment system • Training Simulation – allows to practice without pain or threat to real life patients • Pharmacy – uses a bar code system connected to a stock database to track stocks • Computerised Prescriptions – clear to read, computer checks the dosage prescribed is within the reasonable limits

  37. Police uses of ICT The police make use of ICT in many other areas. - CCTV cameras constantly monitor what we do whilst we are out and about. There are people watching the cameras who will instantly report signs of trouble to the police. - Speed cameras both static and mobile are used to catch motorists who are driving too fast. - Hand-held alcohol breathalysers are used to check if motorists have been drinking too much. - Computer access is available in most police cars - Infra-red equipment is used to track fleeing criminals and missing people during the dark - Schedule duty rotas so that there are always enough police officers on duty - Analysing crime detection patterns and numbers of crimes successfully solved.
