Overview Background: Targeted safety campaign to educate CPS students about proper safety on CTA Campaign Objective: Educate CPS student riders on how to safely ride the CTA bus and rail systems Teach good habits that will last a lifetime Provide informational resources that promote bus and train safety Target Audience: About 140,000 rides provided to kids each school day Campaign developed for 1-5th grades Key Message: Customer safety and security is the #1 priority for the CTA. CTA believes it’s important to teach safety to children to establish good transit-riding habits by educating them on how to safely ride trains and buses

Classroom Curriculum CTA has created an animated educational video that emphasizes important safety messaging points regarding safety on CTA bus and trains and precedes classroom discussion with CTA representatives. Topics include: How often do you ride CTA? What are some safe behaviors on trains and buses? What do you do if you need help on CTA? (i.e., you’re lost or you dropped something on the tracks)

  4. Activity Book • Free activity book for every child reinforces safety concepts in CTA safety video and classroom discussion.

  5. Informative Poster • Poster for every classroom • Reinforces safety themes

  6. Bus Visit • Parked bus at school provides kids the chance to learn more about bus safety (since bus is primary form of transit for many students) • Contingent upon demand and availability of bus/area to stage it • Kids love it!

  7. Pilot Results During the pilot, we visited 420 kids at three CPS elementary schools in the first through fourth grades Wildwood Elementary – Northwest Side Lyman A. Budlong Elementary – North Side Beasley Academic Center– South Side
