Grantees
One minute project summary
At the end of the call, we’ll brainstorm opportunities for grantees to leverage existing resources and support
4. 4 The Exchange Network is… A partnership, including EPA, states, tribes, and others, to support better environmental decisions through improved access to, and exchange of, environmental information
A set of technologies and standards that enable partners to transmit data securely over the Internet
Nodes, Web Services, and XML
5. 5 Exchange Network Governance
6. 6 Getting Started Getting Started Guides are a first stop for partners who would like to:
Join the Exchange Network
Join an Existing Data Exchange
Build a New Data Exchange
7. 7 Exchange Network Participation As the Exchange Network grows, its continued success requires standardization, collaboration, and adherence to some basic rules
The Exchange Network Policy Framework clarifies partner expectations and the status of existing guidance as mandatory or recommended
In special cases, exemptions from the guidance are permitted
8. 8 Key Exchange Network Resources Comprehensive documentation exists and is available on exchange design, development, and implementation, and Node construction; critical documents for partners include:
Data Exchange Guidelines and Best Practices
Flow Configuration Document (FCD) Template and example FCDs
Flow Documentation Checklist
Schema Design, Rules, and Conventions
Node Specifications and Protocol
New or revised documentation this year includes:
FCD Template
Flow Documentation Checklist
Change Management Procedure
Schematron Guidance
Header 2.0 Guidance
Trading Partner Agreement Procedure
Draft RFP Resource to aid less-experienced partners in procuring technical contractors
9. 9 Refresh to existing documentation planned this year:
Eliminate redundancy and inconsistency
Make more user friendly
Bring up to date
Please let us know if you encounter issues with existing documentation
The Exchange Network Website (www.exchangenetwork.net) is your clearinghouse for all Exchange Network resources, including:
Data exchange design guidance
Data exchange-specific resources and status
Exchange Network news Key Exchange Network Resources
10. 10 Central Infrastructure and Tools Network Authentication and Authorization Service (NAAS)
Ensures the security of all EN transactions
Exchange Network Discovery Services (ENDS)/Network Browser
Enables discovery of Node services and partner data on the Exchange Network
When ENDS is ready, please register your Node or Node Client new and the data would like to provide
Node Clients
An easy ‘solution in a box’ that provides most of the functionality of a full-blown Node
Tribes in particular have found Node Clients to be a good alternative
Shared Schema Components (SSCs)
SSCs are already developed, and can be used to implement EN Data Standards
Partners are encouraged to reuse SSCs that meet their business needs rather than build new schemas from scratch
11. 11 Schema Development Best Practices Consult the Exchange Network website to ensure you are not redoing work that has already been done
Follow Exchange Network guidance on schema development
Take advantage of free technical assistance provided by the NOB to developers early in the design process
Communicate schema changes if they are made after the data exchange is published
12. 12 Exchange Network Initiatives ENLC Strategic Plan Implementation
Focus Areas
Climate Change, Geo Data Sharing, Emergency Response, Public Health, and Lab Analytics
Shared Tool
Heartland Emergency Response Exchange (HERE)
Data Standards
Water Quality Conditions and Integrated Assessment Reporting
Open Dump
13. 13 Exchange Network Initiatives Node 2.0
Three major changes to Node technologies (SOAP 1.2, Doc/Literal WSDL, and MTOM)
Changes primarily driven by vendor support issues
Bring the Exchange Network up-to-date with current standards for web services
Functional improvements include:
Enhanced data publishing
Improved transaction processing (data retrieval efficiency, request status availability, etc.)
Interoperability with other networks
14. 14 Exchange Network Initiatives Geospatial Taskforce of the NTG
Develop demonstrations and documentation needed to support adoption of GML on the Exchange Network
Identify and describe potential impacts on Network partners, infrastructure, and tools, and develop recommendations to address these impacts
E.g., improved guidance on use of lat/long schema components
Focus primarily on GeoRSS GML profile of GML
15. 15 Exchange Network Initiatives Data Standards
Updates to several data standards are in process; comments on the following updates will be collected when they are published in the Federal Registry soon
Institutional Controls
Enforcement and Compliance
Tribal Identifier
The EN Governance is also exploring standards opportunities for Open Dump, and Water Quality Conditions and Integrated Assessment Reporting
Information about 25 existing standards will soon be on the Exchange Network website
16. 16 Exchange Network Initiatives Several Integrated Project Teams (IPTs) are in the process of reengineering key data exchanges
RCRA (Version 3.0 planned for release in the near future)
Facility (Testing will occur prior to release of a new version)
NEI (EIS) (Conversion will begin May 2009; no impact on this year’s submission)
Sally Dombrowski (Dombrowski.Sally@epamail.epa.gov)
TRI (Modifying some schema data elements)
Contact Ingrid Rosencrantz (Rosencrantz.Ingrid@epamail.epa.gov) to join regular IPT calls
If you currently participate in these exchanges, or plan to, stay tuned to information about their implementation schedule and requirements
17. 17 Standing on the Shoulders of Others EPA Exchange Network Grants support core infrastructure development, flow design and implementation, and innovative uses of the Exchange Network (e.g., analytical tools, regional partnerships, etc.)
Visit the archive on the EN Grant Program website to see if work done by others can be incorporated into your efforts
18. 18 Share Successes and Lessons Learned Sharing information about your project benefits everyone by reducing duplicative work, disseminating high-value technologies and lessons, and strengthening partnerships.
Ways you can help:
Contact the NPRG Co-chairs
EN Success Stories profile projects that save resources, provide access to new data, and enhance business processes.
Give Kurt Rakouskas information about your project to post on the Exchange Network website where it can be accessed by others
19. 19 Exchange Network National Meeting Annual conference for the EN community for both IT shops and programs
Learn about new technologies, innovative initiatives, and best practices on the Exchange Network
Share project ideas and identify collaboration opportunities with state, federal, and tribal partners
Register soon for this year’s conference on April 29-May 1 in Nashville, Tennessee
A draft agenda will be available on the EN website
