  1. The Use of Alternative Fuel for Public Transport in the Philippines: The Case of Conversion of Metro Manila Taxis to AutoLPG Jerry Roy P. Deyto Vanessa Michelle A. Manahan Napoleon N. Pagaduan, Jr. Argel C. Salangsang BSCE V-3 Major in Transportation Engineering

  2. Introduction/Background • Increasing population + rapid urbanization = increased demand for mobility & efficient means of transportation • 5.5 million registered vehicles in 2007 (LTO,2007) • 72% of the country’s total vehicle fleet runs on gasoline • Vehicles running on diesel are increasing at an average annual growth rate of 6% • 18% of the total vehicle fleet belongs to the public transportation sector

  3. Introduction/Background • Use of AUTOLPG (automotive liquefied petroleum gas) • Used in the Philippines in the early 90’s • Technology did not flourish • Emerged again late 2004 • Surrounding issues • Health & safety • Social acceptability • Infrastructure • Other obstacles

  4. Objectives • Present the drivers perception and experience with respect to the conversion of vehicles into autoLPG and the use of it in their vehicles as fuel. • Identify and determine the problems encountered prior to shifting to autoLPG. • To determine the operating characteristics of the drivers using AUTOLPG for their taxis.

  5. Government Regulations & Policies • Infrastructure • Availability & Pricing of AutoLPG • Safety • Cost of Conversion • Existing Mode • Gasoline-fed • AutoLPG-fed • Initial Mode • Gasoline-fed CONVERSION Application to other modes

  6. Scope and Limitations • Concerned on the conversion of taxis from gasoline to autoLPG • Effects of conversion to operation • Give recommendations on how alternative fuels could be promoted • Sampling size was based on registered converted vehicle with LTFRB • Limited to the drivers’ perception towards conversion • Strategic areas in Metro Manila

  7. Methodology • Descriptive type of research • 5,736 registered taxis with LTFRB • 387 drivers (5%) • Survey method (face-to-face interviews) • Interview with relevant sectors

  8. Analysis & Interpretation of DataTaxi Operations * 19 DTI-BPS Recognized Automotive LPG Conversion Shop (as of 07 November 2007)

  9. Analysis & Interpretation of DataTaxi Operations • 94 retailing dispensing stations in Metro Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, CDO & Davao • 64 garage-based dispensing stations nationwide

  10. Analysis & Interpretation of DataTaxi Operations Cost of Conversion

  11. Analysis & Interpretation of DataTaxi Operations Number of years using autoLPG

  12. Analysis & Interpretation of DataTaxi Operations increase Comparison of Income

  13. Analysis & Interpretation of DataTaxi Operations Comparison of Boundary

  14. Analysis & Interpretation of DataTaxi Operations Comparison of Fuel Costs

  15. Analysis & Interpretation of DataTaxi Operations Factors that motivated conversion

  16. Analysis & Interpretation of DataTaxi Operations Factors that prevent others from converting

  17. Analysis & Interpretation of DataTaxi Operations Problems Encountered

  18. Analysis & Interpretation of DataTaxi Operations Promotion of Conversion

  19. Findings & Conclusion • AutoLPG’s lower pricing is the main reason why many were motivated to convert to the said fuel. • Aside from that, incentives like extension of franchise encourage also others to convert • Due to the unconfirmed issues concerning safety attached to it has led many not motivated. • High cost of conversion

  20. Findings & Conclusion With regards to their operations; • increased income, • increased boundaries, and • less fuel cost were the after effects of conversion to their operation.

  21. Findings & Conclusion • Formulation of policies to encourage conversion, • lower operational cost due to conversion Recommendations • Effective information dissemination and advocacy regarding the benefits of autoLPG • study regarding the air quality inside a converted car. • study on the side of the operators to fully understand the undertaking regarding the use of alternative fuels
