  3. Frequently used as patriotic symbols. They often represent patriotic sentiments and the character of a nation at the time the anthem was written. They are the musical version of a flag or motto for a country. National Anthems

  4. Reflect the natural beauty of the land National heroes Describe the nation’s flag Sometimes national anthems are rewritten to reflect political change. What are national anthems about?

  5. Many older anthems (like those for France and the United States) were written during national crisis. Anthems can be prayers, a call to arms, or about the struggle for freedom. Subject of National Anthems

  6. Hymns – stately, smooth melodic movement. European anthems of this kind tend to be the oldest. Marches– often in 2/4 time signature with a strong pulse. Marches are also one of the oldest style of anthems. Operatic –long and elaborate, with a long orchestral introduction and often in the form of chorus-verse-chorus Folk-anthems– based on folk music, these types use traditional folk instruments Fanfares – a flourish, usually without text Style of Music

  7. Music: “To Anacreon in Heaven” written by John Stafford Smith (1750-1836). The song was written in London, but was also well-known in the US. Text: The original poem “The Defence of Ft. McHenry” was written by Francis Scott Key (1779-1843). The song became our national anthem in 1931. The Star-Spangled Banner

  8. The US national anthem was written during a time of national crisis: The War of 1812. It describes the victory at the Battle of Baltimore. It is most like a “hymn” in style. The Star-Spangled Banner
