The Impact of Sex Education It has been identified that in countries reporting low or falling rates of teenage parenthood there was more likelihood of: adequate sex education and information accessible contraceptive services, assertiveness training communication about contraception Contraception The Board Game

  4. The Game Itself Contraception The Board Game not only places these 4 themes within a sound educational framework but also within a recreational context to encourage communication and discussion Contraception The Board Game

  5. Aim of the Game • To enable open discussion and deep learning about sexual health and contraception in a relaxed, enjoyable and constructive peer-group setting Contraception The Board Game

  6. Playing the Game • As players advance around the board they come into contact with statements and questions which stimulate discussion with peers and reinforce or elicit facilitator input Contraception The Board Game

  7. Questions • The game looks at the mechanics of contraception through questions and true / false statements on the SAFE and RISKS cards. Contraception The Board Game

  8. Safe and Risk Cards • Through these statements a clear distinction is made between safe and risky sexual behaviour. Contraception The Board Game

Service Availability • Advancing around the board brings players into contact with places where services can be accessed, • Sexual health advice and genito-urinary medicine • Pharmacy and over the counter contraceptives Condom Machines • Family Planning FPA Brook Centres • GP Services NHS Direct A and E Contraception The Board Game

  10. Assertiveness and Choices Players are also directed at various intervals during the game to make an assertive statement which strengthens their ability to express their own needs, and decline unwanted pressure Contraception The Board Game

  11. Opportunities for Peer Learning Peer education is a key feature of the game. At certain stages a question card will present two options e.g. EITHER Using the condom demonstrator teach the group how to put on a condom. OR Answer a question. The game therefore offers the group peer education opportunities in a safe environment, practising use of language relating to sex, whilst building confidence. Contraception The Board Game
