  1. Lab 12 THE EMOTION AND MEMORY COMPONENTS OF THE LIMBIC SYSTEM

  2. emotional feelings and expression, includes: • a) cortical part of emotion system :    • anterior cingulate gyrus • medial prefrontal cortex          • orbitofrontal gyri    • b) amygdala (key integrator and “grader” of incoming sensory information • c) ventral or limbic basal ganglia : • ventral striatum (nucleus accumbens) • ventral pallidum (output nucleus) • d) dorsomedial nucleus of thalamus • e) hypothalamus - nodal point in organizing visceral & somatic emotion responses. • The emotions structures are connected by • bundles of fibers that include: • •  the cingulum (cortico-cortical connections) • •  the ventral amygdalofugal path (VAPF) for input/output of the amygdala •  the stria terminalis (for communication of the amygdala with the septal area and hypothalamus •   -   the medial forebrain bundle (MFB), the multifunctional ascending and descending tract in the lateral hypothalamus
