The FIP has been designed to complement theoretical knowledge and skills taught in the classroom by providing opportunities for students to apply basic CD concepts, principles, approaches, strategies and techniques on real-life situations in rural and urban settings, particularly in the areas of planning, research, education/training and organizing. The FIP has been designed to be the DCD’s vehicle for LEARNING and SERVICE.

  3. Objectives of the FIP 1. Relate theory to practice and evolve theory from practice; 2. Develop a critical awareness from an exposure to existing economic, political and socio-cultural realities; 3. Integrate and identify with the people being served; 4. Acquire/refine appropriate skills and techniques from community development work; and 5. Develop/enhance a commitment to the creation of a just society

  4. BSCD FI Program 18 Units of fieldwork: 9 units for CD 180 (750 hours) 9 units for CD 181 (750 hours) Field-based classes are taken concurrently with CD 180 or CD 181. CD 132 (Project Dev’t and Mgt.) CD 123 (Issues in Mobilization) CD 124 (Innovative Strategies) CD 133 (Community Resource Mgt.) CD 161 (Special Problems) CD 163 (People’s Initiative Economic Ent.)

CD 180:Field practice for developing BASIC SKILLS IN CO • ability to identify basis (es) of planned intervention being implemented in the area through integration, research and community study • familiarity with the whole concept & methods employed in community organizing • ability to integrate and enjoin community participation in community development work • ability to critically assess development programs in the community • skills in documenting the entire fieldwork experience in the community

  6. ability to make a critique and come up with concrete recommendations with regards to the implementation of the partner agency’s program/projects • ability to conceptualize a program of action or a development intervention in the community within the framework of people’s empowerment • ability to facilitate development of people’s knowledge and skills in planning and implementing short-term projects feasible within the semester (e.g. leadership trainings, IGPs, etc.) • ability to hone organizational development skills for POs CD 181:Field practice for developing SPECIALIZED SKILLS in CO

Services and Support to our Fieldwork Partners • Facilitating processes in forming, strengthening, sustaining, expanding POs • Supporting local and national campaigns and mobilizations regarding various issues • Facilitating partnerships between POs and LGUs for projects and services for the community • Assistance in project development and management • Evolving new tools and strategies in resource management, disaster management, and others

Fieldwork SUPERVISION • Provide immediate guidance to the students and direction to their work • Learn from the students’ and faculty supervisor’s experiences in development work • Facilitate periodic reflections on their individual and collective activities • Help the students in evaluating the relevance and applicability of organizing concepts and principles learned in the classroom and synthesize these experiences into lessons and insights Objectives of Supervision

Fieldwork SUPERVISION Faculty Supervisor Roles and Responsibilities of Supervisors • develops plan of action for the semester together with students and partner agency • regularly visits the field site and holds field instruction meetings to discuss learning goals, how fieldwork experiences can be maximized, knowledge and skills gained, problems encountered, etc. • conducts psycho-social processing to the students to enhance/hasten fulfillment of learning goals • attends meetings, conferences, study sessions, community activities with the students

Fieldwork SUPERVISION Faculty Supervisor Roles and Responsibilities of Supervisors • reads and comments on students’ field diary, logbook and reports • assists students in developing projects, researches, papers, trainings, training aids that are useful to the community • extends assistance in the implementation of community projects upon the request of the partner agency/people’s organization • synthesizes with the students the latter’s entire fieldwork experience • evaluates and gives the final grade of the students in consultation with agency and other teammates

Fieldwork SUPERVISION Roles and Responsibilities of Supervisors Agency Supervisor • facilitates entry into the community, location of host families and participates in the planning of the workplan • teams up with the faculty supervisor in monitoring and facilitating the provision of inputs to the students with regard to program implementation

Basic framework and principles that must guide our behavior in our fieldwork communities: • our pro-people stance • bias for the most vulnerable and marginalized groups • promotion of participatory, empowering processes • the people in the community determines/ takes the lead in their development process • recognition of people’s capacity to transform their situation • basic respect for human rights Conduct & Behavior in the Field

Physical Appearance:dress modestly; wearing of jewelry and displaying of expensive gadgets are discouraged • Behavior and Speech: • No drinking of liquor and alcoholic drinks • No gambling • No taking of prohibited drugs • No use of incriminating materials (I.e. guns, bladed weapons) • No brawls • No unplanned social visits by boyfriends or girlfriends • No courting, no flirting. • Any act of sexual harassment shall be dealt with in accordance with the law (RA 7877) and/or the UPD Policy on Sexual Harassment Conduct & Behavior in the Field

  16. With our Host Families: • We should seek to be treated as a regular members of the family • We should seek to help rather than be a burden to our host family. In particular: • Do not demand for special food, unless there are dietary restrictions • Put away your beddings and other personal belongings • Fetch your own bath water • Do your own laundry • Do your share or assist in household chores Conduct & Behavior in the Field

Among the people we work with in the field area: • Be punctual and prepare for set meetings and activities to be conducted within or outside the field area. • Ensure people’s participation in making decisions that will be affecting them. • Avoid making any promises, even hints of providing solutions with regards to expressed needs. These would only create false hopes, instead, always give emphasis on what can be achieved by the people’s organized and collective action. Conduct & Behavior in the Field

  18. Among Students: • Students should consciously show that they are cooperating with one another. If misunderstanding occurs, students should work it out within their group. • No overt demonstration of affection • Ensure regular reflection sessions or self and peer evaluation sessions, especially when conflicts within the team/area arise.   19. Parental and Social Visits Parental and social visits need to be pre-arranged with the faculty and agency supervisors. Prior consent will have to be sought. Such visits must also not distract students from their FW responsibilities. The concerned student has the responsibility to orient/brief his/her visitors on the proper code of behaviour while in the community. Unplanned visits by boy/girlfriends are strictly prohibited.

Fieldwork Requirements Required number of hours • Students are required to spend a minimum of 750 hours in the fieldwork area for a 9-unit course, 500 for a 6-unit course, and 250 for a 3-unit course • For field-based classes and sharing sessions in Diliman, students are required to spend a minimum of 48 hours • Absences equivalent to 20% of the minimum # of hours required in both instances shall be basis for dropping • Students are encouraged to take a one-day rest. However, it should not coincide with activities in the fieldwork area. Students taking a day-off must have the approval of the faculty or agency supervisor or agency representative in the fieldwork area.

Project Description and Analysis • for CD 180 - general approaches to CO, community issues • for CD 181 - focus on program framework, strategies, impact on the community • B. Case Analysis • III. Required papers in other Field-based Subjects • IV. Reflective Section - presents the results of a thorough analysis and reflection of the students on the entire fieldwork activities

  23. Students are not simply “trained” but find fulfillment in being able to witness and accompany people’s struggles and achievements. For many students, their fieldwork experience served as a turning point – a defining moment – for deciding to pursue CD not just as a career but also as a profession of committed service (LP dela Cruz 2004).

Field Partnership • The fieldwork instruction program of DCD-CSWCD is being carried out in partnership with a partner development agency – (Government, LGU, NGO, PO) Ang Field Instruction Program ng DCD-CSWCD ay naisasakatuparansapamamagitanngpakikipagtuwang (partnership) saisangahensyangpangkaunlaran – government, LGU, NGO, PO)

Criteria for Considering Field Partner • Shares the vision and perspective of the College; • Willingness to cooperate with the College in developing and implementing the Field Instruction Program through strategic partnerships • Currently undertaking a community-based or sector-based programs/ projects with an organizing component;

Criteria for Considering Field Partner • Availability of a capable agency supervisor to assist the students in accomplishing their learning objectives; • Preferably willing to accommodate at least three (3) undergraduate or two (2) graduate students for field placement; • Willing to send representatives to Field Instruction Program meetings;

Criteria for Considering Field Partner • Has adequate measure to safeguard students’ security and safety while on the field • Able to provide logistics and material resources to students • With CD programmes that provide students with opportunity for innovation and creativity • Program is in line with CD faculty interest

  29. Tungkulinng DCD-CSWCD • providing development services upon the request of the partner agency for effectively and efficiently implementing development programs and initiatives; pagbibigayngmgapagsasanay o iba pang mgaserbisyonahihilinginngkabalikatnaahensyaparasamahusaynapagpapatupadnitongmgaprograma; at Gawain; • conducting post-fieldwork evaluation and sharing sessions among students, faculty and agency representatives at the end of the semester. paglulunsadngpagtatasa at talakayanngmgamag-aaralkasamangiba pang guro at mgakinatawanngkabalikatnaahenisyasapagtataposngsemestre.

  32. Katuwangnaahensya (Partner Agency) • transportation allowance for (2) roundtrip fares from Diliman, Quezon City to the field site or equivalent transportation arrangement (for outside of Metro Manila placements and subject to negotiation dalawang (2) roundtrip napamasahe o masasasakyanmula UP Dilimanpatungosa _________(samgalugarnalabasng metro manila) • reimbursement of transportation and operational expenses to be incurred by the students related to their field work activities; gastossapamasahe at iba pang operational expenses ngmgamag-aaralhabangtinutupadnilaangmganapagkasunduanggawain;
