Coronaviruses (CoV) is a large family of viruses that cause diseases ranging from common colds to more serious diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). The novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain not previously identified in humans. Coronaviruses are zoonotic, which means they are spread between animals and humans. Specific studies have shown that SARS-CoV has been spread from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Many identified coronaviruses occur in species that have not yet affected humans.
