  1. Automatic Air Brake Aasha Sutton Sterling Hurd

  2. What is the automatic air brake? • Braking system used in case of undesired train parting • It can start automatically or the train engineer control it with a valve in the cab.

  3. Why is it important? • Before the automatic air brake, power was cut from the train and “brake men” jumped from car to car turning the brakes off. • Insures no “runaway” trains

  4. Parts of the Automatic air brake • Train compressor (air pump) • Main reservoir • Auxiliary reservoir • Triple valve • Brake cylinder • Brake valve • Main pipe

  5. How does the Automatic Air Brake works? • Air travels from air pump to brake valve • When the brake valve is put in service position air is released to the main reservoir and each individual auxiliary reservoir • High pressure air pushes against the brake cylinder which pushes into the brake shoes stopping the wheel from turning

  6. Improvements Eaton 7.5 HP two stage air compressor- • 50,000+ hours of use • 7.5 horse power • 80 gallons
