Overview of Biochemistry • Biochemistry is the application and study of chemicals interacting with biological structures. • Began around the 20th century when scientists fused biology, chemistry, and physiology together. • Created as a way to explain reasons for diseases • Impacted medicinal research as well as pharmaceutical research.

  3. Job Description and Activities • Biochemists study and research the biological processes in living systems. • They attempt to explain why certain biological processes respond the way that they do. • Biochemists attempt to figure out how to improve on these processes by changing around proteins and by adding/removing different chemical components.

  4. Places of Employment • As a Biochemist, people are usually found in modern research facilities within universities. • They can also be found within hospitals and private-sector labratories. • Biochemists are also usually found in the Center for Disease Control and other larger government jobs.

  5. Personal Characteristics • In order to be a Biochemist, one usually possesses the following attributes: • Curiosity of the chemical origins of life • Creative • Imaginative • Hardworking • Has mastered interpersonal skills • Must have written and oral communication skills

  6. Occupational Outlook • Occupational outlook for Biochemists is currently very good in basically all areas. • Fields are constantly expanding, and research is needed in the genetics sector. • The agricultural field is also growing steadily. • Industrial need is ever-growing as well. • Professors in academia are constantly needed to teach future generations.

  7. Education and Training • Biochemists usually have their undergraduate work specialized in Biochemistry or Chemistry. • There are specialized one-year programs after undergraduate work is completed for laboratory techniques. • Positions in laboratories and in teaching require a master’s degree at least, and prefer a doctoral degree.
