  1. Pastor/TeacherJim Rickard Thursday, May 28, 2009 Grace Fellowship Churchwww.GraceDoctrine.org

  2. Memory VerseJohn 14:2, “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.”

  3. John 14:13-14Jesus the Co-Sponsor and Co-Answerer of our Prayers

  4. 1 John 5:14-15, “This is the confidence which we have before Him (GtF), that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.”

  5. Prayer is an extension of the spiritual life.

  6. The Gospel emphasizes the Deity of Christ being co-equal with the Father in regards to our prayers, which should give us confidence in our spiritual lives.

  7. The First Epistle emphasizes the Plan of the Father for our spiritual lives, which should give us confidence.

  8. You are not spiritual because you pray. You pray because you are spiritual.

  9. Therefore, prayer is a result of the spiritual life, an extension of the spiritual life, yet the spiritual life is not a result of prayer.

  10. John 14:13 “And whatever”, indicates a contingency generally denoting supposition, wish, possibility or uncertainty.

  11. “You ask” - Aorist, Active, Subjunctive, 2nd P.P. of AITEO = to ask, request, beg, call for, crave or desire.

  12. It indicates our Royal Priesthood and the potentiality of prayer. Your volition is involved.

  13. “In My name”, Dative of Indirect Object - Jesus Christ the High Priest seated at the right hand of the Father.

  14. “In My name”, Dative of Indirect Object - Jesus Christ the High Priest seated at the right hand of the Father. We ask through the person of Christ.

  15. “I will do” - Future, Active, Indicative of POIEO. God the Father answers prayers, John 15:16; 16:23-24, 26, but so does the Son, John 14:13-14 cf 10:30.

  16. “So that” – HINA, a Purpose Clause, with HO PATERA - “the Father”, and the Aorist, Passive, Subjunctive of DOXAZO = “to render or esteem glorious”, for “may be glorified”.

  17. When the Son and Father answer our prayers the Father is glorified.

  18. Instrumental of Means - EN HO HUIOS “by means of the Son.” When we offer prayers in the Name of the Son, the Father is glorified by the Son’s High Priestly work.

  19. Vs. 14 “If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.”The word “Me” should not be in this text.

  20. If this were part of the text it would be the only place in the Bible where Jesus or one of the Apostles or writers mentions praying to God the Son.

  21. All other prayer references command that we pray to the Father, Mat 6:9.

  22. 3rd class “If” EAN plus the Aorist, Active, Subjunctiveof AITEO for “If you all ask, maybe you will and maybe you won’t”.

  23. TIS = “anything”.It is not open ended but has the context “according to His will” in 1 John 5:14.

  24. “In My name” = there must be doctrine in the right lobe for spiritual maturity leading to highly effective prayers that are offered “according to His will” and therefore answered.

  25. “I will do it.”When seated at the right hand of the Father, Jesus will co-sponsor our prayer petitions and their answer.
