  3. Class Discipline: Consequences of inappropriate behaviors: DON’T MAKE A PROBLEM! • 1. SOMETHING will happen. (It will be between you and me) • 2. I make an appointment *with you. • 3. Home call • 4. To office ie. ELECTRONIC DEVICES, food and “sleeping” ARE A BIG PROBLEM!

Class guidelines: • “I” Statements: I think, I feel,Could I please have, I must have missed, I don’t have… • Active listening: Uh-huh, eye contact, taking notes, nod your head. • YOU MUST USE CORNELL NOTES! • Patience:Wait for the right time to respond. • Respect:For yourself, others, property. • Honesty: At all times! • Risk Taking: Take the risk and grow as a person.

  5. Class guidelines- Odou (cont.) • Personal Responsibility: If you did it, own it! Keep track of your grade…every day! • Confidentiality: It’s my responsibility to you, and yours to me. • Respect: Everyone is welcome, has a right to be here and we all need to feel safe at school… It’s also the law!

  6. Others: • You can not sleep in here. • No food, gum, beverages. (water ok) • Do not pass notes/ write social letters. • No disruptive noises/ “e-devices” will be confiscated EVERY TIME no warnings! • Keep this room clean.

  7. Struggle: • There is no progress without Struggle! Sometimes it’s supposed to be hard…that process is called learning. Without it, we don’t value it as much. So get involved, ask questions, and try. You must be doing your work in class to pass each day.

  9. Communication Styles • Teacher lectures…blah, blah, blah. • Students all talk at once…”white noise”…(sometimes good). • Students talk while teacher talks…”duh, huh?” • Nobody speaks

  11. Looking at History with “New EYES” • History IS a matter of perspective • Point of view? Who’s? • The people who tell the story ( the winners)…right? • Why might the “other sides” history be left out? • What might be missing? • So…Where does the TRUTH lie? • How would you find it? • Does it matter? • What is the point of learning history? • Do you agree with the phrase.. “By what ever means necessary” ?

  12. Looking through NEW lenses… • Fact Finding • Sharing information • Telling the truth • Knowing Facts vs. Opinions • Multiple sources. • Oral Histories: Are family histories important? Absolutely. • Community histories?

  13. Howard Zinn: 1922-2010 • “Nations are not communities and have never been. The history of any country, presented as the history of a family, conceals fierce conflicts of interest. And in such a world of conflict, a world of victims and executioners, it is the job of thinking peoplenot to be on the side of the executioners.”

  18. So, let’s get started… • What do you know? • Where would you start telling the story of America? • What do we think we know? • Why do we even needgovernments? • Who rules and makes the rules? • Who benefits/ who doesn’t? • Write a 2 page history of your family…Due by Friday.

  19. Family History- include • Origin= source, starting point. • Religion • Movement/ migration, when? • Trade? Profession? • Relatives? Noteworthy? • Talents? Music, arts, sports? • Connections to other places?
