  1. „WFD Classification approach in Coastal Waters of Lower Saxony“Uda TuenteMarine BiologistLower Saxon State Agency of Ecology Coastal Research StationWG WilhelmshavenTMAP-WFD WorkshopHamburg27 – 28 January 2004

  2. WFD River basin districtsGerman Coast

  3. CW-NEA1 euhaline - exposed CW-NEA2 euhaline - sheltered CW-NEA3 polyhaline - exposed CW-NEA4 polyhaline - moderately exposed WFD Intercalibration TypesExamples for European Coastal Waters

  4. WFD Quality elements Coastal Waters Biological quality elements Phytoplankton Species composition, Abundance, Biomass Macrophytes Composition, Abundance Benthic invertebrates Composition, Abundance Other Elements Nutrient Conditions, Specific Pollutants Transparency, Thermal Conditions, Oxygen Conditions, Salinity

  5. WFD Quality Status Classification Ecological Status: High Good Moderate Poor Bad Chemical Status: Good Failing to archieve good

  6. Ways of building the WFD Classification • Use “normative descpritions” of WFD (Annex V) • Use existing methods where available • Exploit existing time series • Identify any gaps in existing methods • Avoid duplication • Avoid diversion • Avoid excessive costs

  7. Indicators for WFD Classification„Failing to archieve the good status“in Coastal Waters of Lower Saxony“ Nutrients: Contents in Coastal waters too high Pressure: Eutrophication Macrophytes: Decreasing of Sensitive Communities (Missing Regeneration of Seagrass) Increasing of Opportunistic Communities (Temporal Spreading of Floating Green Algae) Pressure: Eutrophication and Habitat Degradation Phytoplankton: Increase of Bloom Intensity and Primary Production Pressure: Eutrophication

  8. First Assessment for WFD Quality Status in Coastal WatersofLower Saxony • - Intercalibration Process - • Draft -July 2003 „Coastal Waters of Lower Saxony are possibly failing to archieve the WFD Good Status“ e.g. due to high nutrient loads

  9. Summary • WFD Classification and Assessment is still in process • First Draft of WFD Assessment must be verified and specified by a completed WFD Classification System •  Expert judgement is needed!
