  1. How to choose a format for your website images? Icons, Illustrations and Graphics

  2. Images and graphical illustrations are omnipresent on a website. Website owners generally lack knowledge regarding various types of formats of an image. Following is a quick guide to help you get acquainted with types of formats of images. It will help you decide exactly what type of image should you choose according to your requirements.

  3. Types of format There are broadly two types of images - 1. Raster Images - Raster images constitute of all those images made out of pixels. Almost every picture online or in print is a raster image. Pixel images, when stretched, provide a blurry and unclear effect. It is more preferred on the digital platform. Vector Images - Vector images are highly flexible. Their quality and resolution remains the same even if the image gets resized to any dimension. And, therefore it is more preferred for the print platform or for logos. 2.

  4. Types of Raster Images

  5. a. GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) Images 1. GIF format is an excellent choice if you are looking for merely animation in the desired image. Its color palette provides up to 256 colors only and it's usually up to 8 bit in size. It is widely used on Tumblr and advertising purpose. Apart from being a poor choice for a high quality image, it can only be used on a digital platform as its animated feature cannot be transferred onto the print version. 2. 3. 4.

  6. b. PNG (Portable Network Graphics) images 1. PNG format is preferred when an image with a sharp output but transparent background is required. It can be 8 bit, 24 bit or 32 bit. PNG-8 provide up to 256 colors, but PNG-24 provides unlimited color options. PNG images are not supported by older browsers. 2. 3. 4.

  7. c. JPEG (Joint photographic Experts Group) images 1. JPEG format is preferred for complex and large photos, especially still photography. It can accommodate up to 16.8 million colors. In color mode, they support 24 bit per pixel. In grayscale, they support 8 bits per pixel. It is the best choice for e -commerce website solutions where only high definition images are required. It has a “Lossy” (Loss of information) feature i.e. its resolution decreases when it is resized to a smaller size. 2. 3. 4.

  8. 2. Vector Images Vector images are created with the help of particular set of proportional formulas (mathematical statements). Unlike raster images, they are not made up of pixels. And therefore, their resolution per pixel remains the intact no matter how much the image is zoomed in. Vector images also take up a small space as they need not store color information about each and every pixel. Instead, they store the mathematical formula only. Vector format is highly preferred for logos due to its high resolution feature, even after resizing.
