  1. EDITORIAL WRITING DAY 3

  2. Swbat understand the structure of an editorial • DO NOW: Look back over your brainstorm • You need to make two columns

  3. STRUCTURE • HOOK/INTRO: • ANECDOTE • STORY • STAGGERING STAT • STANDARD

  4. BODY • Journalism paragraphs are not like normal paragraphs. • Each time you introduce a new source, you will start a new paragraph. Each time you bring up a new point, you will start a new paragraph. Again, be sure that you tell the source for each bit of information you add to the story.

  5. Body • Position Statement/Thesis Statement/ Main Idea: a one sentence statement of your position • Explanation of stance and reasons for taking it • Support from experts, authorities that include facts, statistics and/or consequences if the other side wins.

  6. Body (More) • Depending on your editorial, you might need to retell what happened in order to establish your opinion, Example: • Over Labor Day weekend, a bunch of teenagers broke into Brian Holloway’s house, had a party and trashed his house. They posted pictures to social media websites that showed them drinking and doing drugs.

  7. CONCLUSION • You might want to consider the other point of view and then reaffirm your position. Example: While the parents might think they are protecting their children in suing Holloway, in fact they are teaching their children a terrible lesson. Basically, they learned that they can break the law, destroy property, and have mommy and daddy clean up their mess.

  8. Activity • Some of you still need a strong idea. • You need to get your topic approved by me. • If you are ready to write, start thinking of your hook. LAB DAY We will start typing and adding in additional research.
