  1. Diversity and inclusion: MCOM live 12th April 2016

  2. There are two objectives to the session

  3. Context: diversity and inclusion for the profession • Over the last six months diversity and inclusion has formed a key part of the GCS Improvement programme. Our strategy has now been agreed at the ministerial board and has focused on -

  4. Our People Survey results

  5. Exercise 1: Two-minute activity – exploring your own diversity There’s a lot more than meets the eye… Think about what makes you diverse: • Values and purpose • (i.e. motivators, beliefs) • Identity (i.e. hobbies, attitudes, behaviours) • Likes and dislikes (i.e. working style, activities) …and which of these you bring to work currently

  6. Exercise 2: how do you create the right environment? Take five minutes to discuss and then feedback. Do you create an environment where... • Diversity is visible and celebrated? • People stand up against stereotypes? • People are open to different styles of working? • Your team can bring their passion to work – through corporate contribution, social activities or discussion? If not… how can you do more of this?

  7. Why are we talking about this at MCOM live? • It is key to MCOM that government communications are insight driven - and audience rather than policy focused • Teams are getting smaller – how do we make the most of our own diversity and use insight techniques to really understand our audience? • We now have more opportunities to provide direct to audience content – rather than going through external press. Writing for our audience is more important than ever!

  8. OK… but why does this matter? • Examples… • 8 million people belong to an ethnic minority, including 1 in 4 children under the age of 10! • Priorities such as preventing radicalisation and the Scottish referendum demonstrate a vital need to understand and communicate effectively with our audiences

  9. What tools are there to help me? • For further advice on insight materials available, please contact - insight@cabinetoffice.gov.uk • Case studies on using insight – • http://www.ageuk.org.uk/Documents/EN-GB/FaithGood%20Practice%20GuideWEB.pdf?dtrk=true • http://www.nhsconfed.org/~/media/Confederation/Files/Publications/Documents/Engaging-BME-communities-insights-for-impact.pdf • Being an authentic leader: Bring your whole self to work - Ted Talks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd2WKQWG_Dg • The benefits of a growth vs. fixed mindset: http://ed.ted.com/featured/qrZmOV7R • Unconscious bias eLearning -https://civilservicelearning.civilservice.gov.uk/learning-opportunities/unconscious-bias-e-learning • The unconscious bias crib sheet - https://civilservicelearning.civilservice.gov.uk/sites/default/files/resources/Unconscious_bias_crib_sheet.pdf
