  2. Background Information Black Hawk ‘s real name is Makataimeshekiakiak. It meant be a large Black Hawk. He was born in 1767 and lived until 1838. His tribe was called Saukenauk.

  3. Early Life Black Hawk was born in the village of Saukenuk near the Rock River which is now Illinios. Soon, Black Hawk would become one of the greatest chiefs of the Sauk tribe.

  4. Later Life Black Hawk served as chief for more than one thousand Sauk and Fox Indians. The British depended on Native Americans as allies to help them with the war against the Americans.

  5. Interesting Information Some of Black Hawk’s famous desendents maybe Jim Thorpe. Thorpe was believed to be Black Hawk’s great grandson. PresedentRoosvelt ordered a mounment made in Black Hawk’s honor. His mounment stands proudly in Oregon.
