  1. The independent state of Samoa By: Maria Aguilar Shanice Joiner Social Justices

  2. Apia, Samoa • Samoa is a group of islands and is about 1700 miles north east of New Zealand. • The two largest Savai’i and Upolu, account for most of the population with only two others, Manono and Apolima being inhabited. • The islands were originally settled about 1000 b.c. date arrived at by the dating of shards of Lapida pottery found at Mulifanua. • Western Samoa was the first Polynesian state to gain, independence obtaining it from New Zealand in 1962.

  3. Culture of Samoa • The Samoa culture was made in three main parts: faith, family, and music. • Elders in the family are greatly respected and hold the highest status, and this may be seen at a traditional Sunday umu(underground oven.) • Their languages are bilingual; they speak both Samoan and English.

  4. Government • Mix of parliamentary democracy and Fa'a Samoa (Samoan custom/"way").Independence (from New Zealand-administered UN trusteeship): January 1, 1962.Constitution: January 1, 1962. • Exports--$13.37 million: fish, coconut products, nonu fruit products, processing of automotive components, beer, taro. Export markets--New Zealand, Australia, U.S. (includes American Samoa). Imports--$247 million: food and beverages, industrial supplies. Import sources--New Zealand, Hong Kong, U.S. ($19.99 million), Australia, Japan, and Fiji.External debt (2007): $202.8 million (99.9% is owed to multilateral lenders).Currency: Tala (or Samoan dollar).

  5. Geography and People • Samoa consists of the two large islands of Upolu and Savai'i and seven small islets located about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand in the Polynesian region of the South Pacific. The main island of Upolu is home to nearly three-quarters of Samoa's population and its capital city of Apia. The climate is tropical, with a rainy season from November to April. The Fa'a Samoa, or traditional Samoan way, remains a strong force in Samoan life and politics. Despite centuries of European influence, Samoa maintains its historical customs, social systems, and language, which is believed to be the oldest form of Polynesian speech still in existence. Only the Maoris of New Zealand outnumber the Samoans among Polynesian groups

  6. Foreign aids • New Zealand and Australia will jointly give $12.2 million in aid to help Samoa rebuild after the tsunami which took more than 180 lives. • The Government yesterday said the two countries would each provide about $6.1 million toward essential services and infrastructure such as housing, water, power and roads. • The aid announcement came just before last night's memorial service in Waitakereorganised by Auckland's Samoan community. • Prime Minister John Key spoke at the memorial service and laid a wreath, paying tribute to Samoa and those who lost their lives in the tsunami, including eight New Zealanders.
