  1. Instant Response Systems Liven up your classroom!

  2. Instant Response SystemsWhat is it? • Technology used in the classroom to get instant feedback from students • Allows individual responses by students to be collected, scored and tabulated instantly (for instructor) but anonymously (for student)

  3. Question: • Using your response pads, answer the following question: • Have you used this technology in your classroom? • Yes • No Question #2

  4. Instant Response SystemsWhat do you need? • Response pads (clickers) • Receiver • Computer w/ a USB port • Projection system http://www.iclicker.com/hardware/hardware.html

  5. CPS • Classroom Performance System • Can be used separately or embedded in Power Point in your lecture • Can be linked to Blackboard or other online classroom management systems • Requires adoption through your bookstore for CPS

  6. Good for the student… • Student responses are ANONYMOUS • Reduces fear of answering in class • Everyone can participate, not just the “talky” ones • Instant feedback for each of them personally

  7. Example…. • Body fat is often measured using the BMI scale • This is a ratio of your height to weight • It is used for life insurance policies, estimating health risks as well as labeling people as “at a healthy weight, over-weight or obese”

  8. Using this chart, determine your BMI http://kirstyne.files.wordpress.com/2007/09/diabetes_bmi_chart.gif

  9. Good for the instructor… • Measures general knowledge (low level questions) • Generates good “distracters” • Using data of most missed questions and which answer was selected incorrectly most often, can help generate better questions later • Indicates immediately where students need more instruction or explanation • Can be used to stimulate discussion between students • Ask question, discuss, ask again

  10. Good for the instructor… • Records answers • Can look at student info individually or as a class • Can collect attendance/participation information

  11. Instant Response SystemsWhen used? • Mostly in lecture settings • Large or small • Can be used for testing • Can communicate with Blackboard (or other platforms possibly) • Can be used to collect attendance

  12. Testing • Students get “hard” copy of test • Instructor puts in answers after writing test • Students input answers via the responders • System collects and corrects the data • Instructor generates report and records grades

  13. Instructor Time • Learning program • Enrolling students • Booting up program • Student training • Writing questions • Recording into gradebook I probably spend 45 minutes per week outside of the classroom

  14. Resources • http://www.einstruction.com/ • http://www.iclicker.com/hardware/hardware.html • Rob Spohr, MCC Business instructor and Dean of Occupational Programs • Marvel Teunissen, Technology Support Coordinator Survey
