  1. Background: Expression of individuality is a highly valued aspect of American identity and culture, while conforming to society’s rules is seen as necessary to success and survival. Prompt: The theme of individuality versus conformity runs through many pieces of American literature. There are both consequences and rewards for characters who choose to express their individuality and for those who choose to conform to society. Explore how characters from the plays read in class choose individuality or conformity and how their decisions provide them with consequences, rewards, or both. What messages do each of these plays convey about individuality and conformity in American culture? You are to write an essay discussing the consequences and/or rewards for two characters’ decisions to either be an individual or to conform. You must use a character from “The Crucible” and a character from the play your group read.

  2. Introduction: What does America value? When do we praise individuality? When do we praise conformity? Why is this important? Link to what was said before Playwrights use this theme to showcase decisions . . . Mention the authors and the plays - 1-2 sentence summary of each play. (based on how you order the plays in the sentence determines the order of the body paragraphs.) Thesis - subject and opinion. John Proctor and Tom struggle to listen to their inner voice telling them to break away, and although they decide to be individualists in the end, they both suffer consequences.

  3. Body Paragraphs: Topic Sentence: What came before? Prepare the reader for
what in is in this paragraph. Example 1 - What example from the character's actions prove
they are an individualist or conformist? Describe and use a
quote Analysis - This is the area that earns the A. C level work
uses one sentence. For A level work, the student plays
with the information and "give the reader the results of
their thinking."  1. How does this action show the character is an
individualist or conformist?  2. Did the character get a reward or consequence from
his/her action? How do you know? A quote sells the
argument. Concluding sentence - end with a return - why are these actions
valued in America?
